Men's Tennis Reaches NE10 Final with 4-1 Win at Adelphi

Penmen punch ticket to title match for ninth time

With the NE10 Vern Cox Co-Players of the Year going at it at the top singles flight of an NE10 Championship semifinal match Thursday, junior Jesse Den Hartog (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) came out on top in three sets to clinch a 4-1 victory for the third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team against second-seeded Adelphi University at the Adelphi Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • With the Penmen in front, 3-1, Den Hartgog pulled out a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles against Marko Jovanovic to send SNHU to the title match.
  • Graduate student Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) made it 2-0 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles versus Gabriel Balestero. He and sophomore Jonathan Berling (Moss, Norway) combined at No. 1 doubles for a 6-1 triumph over Hugo Munoz Reinoso and Balestero.
  • Berling gave the Penmen a 3-0 lead with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 2 singles against Munoz Reinoso.
  • Freshman Phillipp Roeder (Augsburg, Germany) and grad student Aron Ouwejan (Wervershoof, The Netherlands) clinched the doubles point at No. 3, doubling up Jovanovic and Reece Farrow, 6-3.
NOTES
  • Sophomore Cade Nadeau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) was outlasted by Salomon Arce Lema, 6-4, 2-6, 5-7, at No. 4 singles.
  • Southern New Hampshire has won eight-in-a-row.
  • The Penmen, who have won five NE10 titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), reach the title match for the ninth time, including the second straight year. They suffered a 4-3 loss at Le Moyne in last season's championship match.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with the Panthers, 11-4. The Penmen have won eight of the last nine following a 5-2 regular-season loss at Adelphi back on March 26.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The third-seeded Penmen will try for their sixth NE10 title when they travel to top-seeded Le Moyne College on Sunday (April 23) at 1 p.m.
