Baseball Puts Up 31 Runs in Game One, En Route to Sweep of Assumption

The offense put up 31 runs to more than back a stellar pitching performance from senior Jeffrey Praml (Bridgewater, N.J.) in game one and graduate student Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) fired a one-hitter in game two, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team won a pair of games against Assumption University on Saturday at Rocheleau Field. SNHU rolled to a 31-1 victory in the opener and then shut out the Greyhounds, 6-0, in a seven-inning game two.

KEY MOMENTS – GAME 1
  • Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Schwartz. The Penmen then hung seven in the second, with RBI singles from Vargas Segura, Rivera and Schwartz pushing across the first three before Pisano's three-run shot capped the scoring in the inning and made it an even 10-0.
  • SNHU scored seven more in the fifth. An RBI single to center from sophomore Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) started it, with a Schwartz RBI double and Pisano run-scoring single highlighting the scoring in the inning, which ended with the Penmen leading, 18-1.
  • The Penmen posted their third seven-run frame in the seventh, with RBI singles from freshman Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) and sophomore Zachary Ranney (Wallingford, Conn.), and a two-run double off the bat of Mercedes, doing the majority of the damage in extending the lead to 26-1.
  • SNHU tacked on five more in the eighth, with a hit-by-pitch, sacrifice fly, walk and a fielder's choice bringing in four of them. Freshman Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) also collected an RBI single.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1
  • Schwartz was 5-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored, a home run and a double.
  • Pisano (five RBI, two runs, home run) and Mercedes (three RBI, two runs, double, walk) were both 3-for-4.
  • Vargas Segura (RBI, two runs), Caraher (two runs, double, walk) and La Rocca (three runs, double, walk) each went 2-for-4.
  • Ranney was 2-for-2 with an RBI, two runs and a walk.
  • DeMaro (RBI, run, walk) and junior Dylan O'Sullivan (Manchester, N.H.; two runs, walk) both were 1-for-2.
  • Moreno (RBI, run, walk) and Lavigne (RBI, two runs) each finished 1-for-3.
  • Rivera was 1-for-4 with two RBI, a pair of runs scored and a walk.
  • Wouters went 1-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and a walk.
  • Sophomore John Chacho (Seymour, Conn.) finished 1-for-1 with an RBI, run and two walks.
  • Grad student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) allowed two hits and struck out one in a scoreless frame.
  • O'Sullivan struck out one in a perfect ninth.
KEY MOMENTS – GAME 2
  • SNHU went in front, 1-0, in the second when Burgos stole second and Mercedes scored from third.
  • A Rivera RBI single up the middle doubled the lead to 2-0 in the third.
  • Wouters knocked in a run with a base hit to left in the fourth to stretch the lead to 3-0.
  • Caraher highlighted a three-run seventh with a two-run blast to right before Vargas Segura stroked a run-scoring single to center to make it 6-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2
  • Vargas Segura went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a double.
  • Wouters (RBI) and Burgos were both 2-for-4.
  • Caraher finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored, a home run and a pair of walks. 
  • Rivera was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of walks. Mercedes (two runs) and La Rocca were both 1-for-4.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire receiving votes in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and Collegiate Baseball Division II Poll, has now won 10-in-a-row.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with the Greyhounds, 48-24-2. The Penmen have won nine of the last 10, including three straight. SNHU has also captured 12 of 14 in Worcester since the start of the 2012 season.
  • The Penmen continue to produce at the plate, having scored 274 runs in 29 games (9.4).
  • The 31 runs in game one are the most for SNHU since Feb. 22, 2020 when it posted a 33-5 victory in the first game of a doubleheader with Dominican (N.Y.) University. The 26 hits are the most in a game since at least 2009, but are likely a single-game record.
  • Pisano's home run is his fourth in his first season with the Penmen, while Schwartz' is his fifth of the year and the 14th of his career. Caraher's game-two long-ball was his third of the year and 11th with the Penmen.
  • Wouters has the longest active hitting streak on the club at nine straight games. Rivera has hit safely in 14 of his last 15, including seven straight.
  • Caraher has hit safely in six of seven, while Vargas Segura and Mercedes each have a hit in five of their last six.
  • Moreno extended his hitting streak to seven games in the opener, before having it halted in the nightcap.
  • Over his last two starts, Praml is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA, allowing three runs on 12 hits over 15 innings, while striking out 14 and walking two.
  • Roberge extends his scoreless streak to 11-and-two-thirds innings. During that stretch he has allowed just two hits, while striking out 22 and walking three.
