Junior Carmen Bernardis (Trieste, Italy) posted 12 kills and seven blocks, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Up North Preseason Tournament on Friday at the University of Minnesota Duluth's Romano Gymnasium. The Penmen suffered their first loss of the season to fifth-ranked St. Cloud State University (3-0), but bounced back with a three-set win against Northern Michigan University.

KEY MOMENTS – ST. CLOUD MATCH
- Southern New Hampshire held a 7-6 lead in the opening set when St. Cloud used a 19-4 burst to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
- The Penmen kept the middle stanza tight, trailing 18-17 before the Huskies scored seven of the next nine to take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
- After a pair of Bernardis kills staked SNHU to a 4-1 lead in the third, SCSU countered with a 19-6 rush that opened up a 20-10 advantage. The Penmen scored seven of the next 10 to pull within 23-17, but a pair of attack errors ended it and gave the Huskies the win.

KEY MOMENTS – NORTHERN MICHIGAN MATCH
- SNHU was ahead, 16-14, in the opening set when it reeled off six straight points and nine of the next 12 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
- The Penmen led, 16-9, in the middle stanza when the Wildcats used a 9-1 rush to go in front, 18-17. The set was tied at 23-all when a pair of Northern Michigan attack errors put SNHU up, 2-0.
- SNHU was again on top, 21-19, in the third, with kills from Bernardis and Pimenta, as well as an ace from junior Chiara Di Valerio (Terni, Italy), powering a 4-1 spurt that ended the match.
