When and Where: November 2, 2024 – Garden City, N.Y. (Motamed Field)
Score: #14 Adelphi University 2,  #10 Southern New Hampshire University 1
Records: SNHU 9-1-4 (5-1-3 NE10), AU 10-2-0 (8-1-0 NE10)

Senior Ava Jakich-Kunze (Moscow, Idaho) staked the 10th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, but Adelphi University rallied and scored with 1:31 remaining to swipe a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Motamed Field.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Jakich-Kunze – goal
  • Junior Claudia Keith (Danvers, Mass.) – six saves
  • Junior Imogen Noon (Gold Coast, Australia) – assist
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern New Hampshire struck just over 20 minutes into the contest when Noon's shot from the right side of the box was saved by the Adelphi goalkeeper, but she allowed a rebound that was cleaned up in front by Jakich-Kunze.
  • Adelphi answered just over five minutes later when Kayleigh Goodrich sent a ball toward the right side of the box for Madison Apicella. Keith came out to try and grab the ball, but Apicella beat her there and popped the ball over her head and into the back of the net. The assist for Goodrich pulled her even with Noon for the NE10 lead.
  • The Panthers went in front with 1:31 to play when Carly Issing delivered a free kick into the right side of the box, where Apicella punched it in at the back post.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Adelphi 'keeper Peyton DeRouen stopped six of the seven shots she faced.
  • Adelphi outshot SNHU, 15-14, including 8-7 in shots on goal. It was the first time this season the Penmen had fewer shots than their opponent.
  • Corner kicks were even at 4-4.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, ranked No. 10 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, sees its 13-match unbeaten streak – the third longest in program history – snapped. Adelphi, ranked 14th in the poll, bounces back from a loss last Saturday that snapped a nine-match winning streak.
  • The result had massive implications in the NE10 standings. With Franklin Pierce University defeating Saint Michael's College on Saturday, SNHU needed a tie to keep the No. 2 seed in play, while a win would have allowed the Penmen to control their own destiny for the No. 1 seed. SNHU is now locked in as the No. 3 seed and will host a quarterfinal match Sunday, Nov. 10 (4 p.m.).
  • Adelphi leads the all-time series with SNHU, 21-11-2, and have now nine of the last 12 meetings, including four straight. The last five meetings, and seven of the last nine, have been decided by a single goal. The Panthers have won seven straight at home against SNHU and are unbeaten in the last eight meetings there (7-0-1). The last time the Penmen left Garden City with a win was Oct. 8, 2011 (4-1).
  • Jakich-Kunze's goal is her team-leading sixth of the season.
  • Noon's seventh assist of the season, and third in the last four matches, ties her for the NE10 lead.
  • The Penmen are now 63-25-22 (.673) over their last 110 matches dating back to the start of the 2017 campaign.
UP NEXT
  • The Penmen wrap up the regular season Wednesday, Nov. 6 (4 p.m.) when they play host to cross-town rival Saint Anselm College at Ouellette Stadium.
