Three players scored in double figures but Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball dropped its Northeast-10 conference opener 80-61 at Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday night in New Haven, Conn.

  • Sophomore Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.) - 17 points (6-13 FG, 2-6 3-FG, 3-4 FT), 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block
  • Graduate student Stephanie Davis (Windham, N.H.) – 11 points (5-8 FG, 1-3 FT), 5 rebounds, 3 assists
  • Junior Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) – 11 points (4-8 FG, 2-2 3-PT, 1-2 FT), 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal
  • Freshman Kameron St. Pierre (Swansea, Mass.) – 7 points (2-3 FG, 3-3 FT)
KEY MOMENTS
  • Wager connected on a jumper about a minute into the game for a 2-2 tie, but Owls responded with an 11-3 run and led 24-16 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Penmen trailed 42-31 at the half, connecting on a pair of three-point field goals by St. Pierre and Wager.
  • Davis connected on a lay-up to start the third quarter, but the Owls would extend the lead to 56-42 after three quarters.
  • The Penmen opened the fourth with an 8-4 run to close within 10, but could not get any closer.

  • Sophomore Ava Winterburn (New Boston, N.H.) – 7 points (2-4 FG, 3-4 FT), 2 rebounds, 1 assist.
  • Freshman Samantha Pfeil (Methuen, Mass.) – 5 points (2-6 FG, 1-4 3-FG), 7 rebounds.
  • SNHU shot 22-for-51 (43.1%) including 5-20 (25.0%) from beyond the arc and 12-18 (66.7%) on free throws.
  • SCSU went 28-for-62 (45.2%).  They hit 6-21 three-pointers (28.6%) and went 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the line.
  • The Owls had a 31-29 edge on rebounds, 9-1 on blocked shots, 12-4 on steals, and 29-7 on points off turnovers.
  • The Penmen had 23 bench points to 9 for SCSU.  SNHU had a 13-7 advantage on second-chance points.
  • Southern Connecticut was led by graduate student Katie Williamson with 23 points.
NOTES
  • Wager's 17 points are the most scored by an SNHU player this season and she leads the team at 12.6 points per game.
  • St. Pierre matched her career-high of seven points.
  • Freshman Taylor Brennan (Southbury, Conn.) hit a free throw for her first career point.
  • Southern Connecticut has won three of the last four games with SNHU and leads the all-time series 43-30.
  • The Owls are receiving votes, just outside the top 25 in this week's D2CSC Women's Basketball Poll.   SCSU improves to 5-0 for the first time since its national championship season, 2006-07.
  • SNHU is 62-29 (.681) since the start of the 2021-22 season.
