#16/20 Assumption Seizes Control Late in 78-65 Win Over Women's Basketball

Sophomore Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) notched a career-high 23 points and the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team erased a 14-point, first-half deficit, but No. 16/20 Assumption University took control over the final six-and-a-half minutes for a 78-65 victory Saturday at the Stan Spirou Field House.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Assumption jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the opening 3:37 and eventually ran its advantage to as many as 14 at 22-8 with just under three minutes left in the first quarter. Timberlake scored five of the next six points and Southern New Hampshire trimmed its deficit to 23-15 at the end of one.
  • SNHU scored 11 of the first 15 points of the second quarter – Knight had five and Gordon added four – to pull within 28-26 with 4:46 remaining before the break. The margin was seven with less than three minutes to go when a pair of Gordon 3-pointers, including one just before the buzzer, powered an 8-1 blitz that left the game tied at 34-all at halftime.
  • A Gordon basket 11 seconds into the second half put the Penmen in front for the first time, while a Knight bucket gave the hosts their largest lead of the contest at 38-34 with 8:19 to go in the third quarter. Three lead changes and a tie ensued, but Assumption exited the third quarter with a 51-49 edge.
  • Four ties left the game even at 58-all with 6:27 on the clock before Assumption scored 20 of the next 24 points to claim a 78-62 advantage with 24 seconds remaining.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.) posted nine points (3-5 FG, 1-3 3-FG, 2-2 FT), three rebounds and three assists.
  • graduate student Macy Spinks (Luton, U.K.) chipped in three points (1-4 FG, 1-3 3-FG).
  • Junior Megan Deans (Winterport, Maine) tallied six boards, three helpers and a pair of steals in a career-high 22 minutes off the bench.
  • Assumption narrowly outshot Southern New Hampshire, 47.5 percent (29-61) to 47.2 percent (25-53), including 50 percent (10-20) to 46.2 percent (6-13) from long range. The Greyhounds were also slightly better from the line, 76.9 percent (10-13) to 75 percent (9-12).
  • The Penmen won the glass (32-31), while the Greyhounds scored more points off turnovers (22-10) and second chance points (10-6), received more scoring from their bench (5-0) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (14/12-14/19). The paint (32-32) and fast break scoring (6-6) were even.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, which had won 11 of its last 13 contests, including seven straight, has now lost three straight for the first time all season.
  • Assumption, ranked 16th in the Division II College Sport Communicators (D2CSC) Media Poll and 20th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, has captured 13 of 14.
  • SNHU is in fourth place in the NE10 standings with one game remaining in the regular season and has clinched at least the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship. The top four seeds receive a first round bye and host a quarterfinal game March 3.
  • Assumption leads the all-time series with SNHU, 38-21, and has captured nine of the last 12 meetings, though the teams have split the last six. The Greyhounds have won four of five at SNHU.
  • The Penmen suffered an 81-51 loss at Assumption back on Jan. 20, giving the Greyhounds their first sweep of the regular season series since 2019-20.
  • Knight's double-double is the 22ndof her career and eighth of the season.
  • SNHU is now 60-23 (.723) since the start of the 2021-22 season, including 28-12 (.700) at the Stan Spirou Field House.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen wrap up the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 27 (5:30 p.m.) when they play host to the College of Saint Rose at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports 930-AM.
