Men's Hoop Has Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped with 76-73 OT Loss to New Haven

Graduate student Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.) and graduate student Alex Rivera (Lowell, Mass.) scored 23 and 18 points, respectively, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team suffered a 76-73 overtime loss to the University of New Haven on Saturday at the Stan Spirou Field House.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire led, 19-16, with a little more than eight minutes to play in the opening half when New Haven ripped off a 10-0 run to go up, 26-19, with 5:29 left. The Chargers grabbed their largest lead of the half at 33-25 with 1:24 on the clock and brought a 35-28 into the locker room.
  • New Haven was in front, 44-35, four minutes into the second half when a Becht 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 run that pulled the Penmen within 44-43 with 14:08 remaining. The Chargers countered with a 14-5 span to take their largest lead of the contest at 58-48 with 8:39 to play, but SNHU scored 18 of the next 25 – with 12 coming on four triples from Rivera – to seize a 66-65 lead with 26 ticks left. Tyler Saint-Furcy was fouled with 8.9 seconds to go and made one of two at the line to send the game to overtime.
  • SNHU scored the first three points of the extra session, but New Haven netted six straight to go on top, 72-69, with under a minute to play. The Penmen were within 74-73 with under four seconds to go, but New Haven hit a pair at the line to go up three and the SNHU heave at the buzzer did not fall.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Jordan Brathwaite (Silver Spring, Md.) posted seven points (3-4 FG, 1-1 3-FG), three rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
  • Junior Kurtis Henderson (Brockton, Mass.) recorded three points (1-5 FG, 1-2 3-FG) and two assists.
  • New Haven outshot Southern New Hampshire, 49.2 percent (30-61) to 44.4 percent (24-54), including 52.9 percent (9-17) to 48.6 percent (17-35) from beyond the arc. The Chargers were also better from the line, 77.8 percent (7-9) to 72.7 percent (8-11).
  • The Penmen scored more points off turnovers (12-7), received more scoring from their bench (18-9) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (13/6-15/12), while the Chargers captured the glass (41-21) and the paint (34-14), scored more second chance points (16-9) and on the fast break (4-0).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire had won five of its last seven, including three straight.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with New Haven, 52-29, while the teams have split the last six meetings. The Chargers have won three of the last five at SNHU.
  • The Penmen recorded a 64-58 victory at New Haven in the first regular-season meeting back on Dec. 2.
  • Over the five seasons of head coach Jack Perri's tenure, the Penmen are 42-18 (.700) at home, including 6-2 this season.
  • Grant, who was a 59 percent free throw shooter last season, started this campaign 15 of 24 (62.5%) from the line over his first six games, but has since gone 40-for-50 (80%) over his last 14, including 21-for-24 (88%) in the last seven.

  • The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Feb. 7 (7:30 p.m.) when they take on Bentley University.
  • The next home game for SNHU is Saturday, Feb. 10 (3:30 p.m.) when it takes on Adelphi University at the Field House in a game that airs live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports New Hampshire 930-AM.
