Women's Basketball Overtakes New Haven, 82-63

Timberlake drops game-high 26 to move into third on all-time scoring list

Graduate student Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) poured in a game-high 26 points to move into third place on the program's all-time scoring list and lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to an 82-63 victory against the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon at the Stan Spirou Field House.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening 1:15 and led by four (16-12) with 2:45 left in the first quarter when New Haven used a 7-2 stretch to grab a 19-18 edge with a minute to go. SNHU would bring a 20-19 advantage into the second quarter.
  • Gordon knocked down a 3-pointer to open the second-quarter scoring and stretch the lead to four. Baskets from Timberlake and Knight later in the stanza gave the Penmen their largest lead of the first half at 38-31 with under a minute remaining. SNHU carried a 39-34 lead into the break.
  • SNHU scored 13 straight to open the second half as part of an 18-2 blitz – led by nine points from Timberlake – that widened the gap to 57-36 at the midway point of the third quarter. The Penmen held their largest lead of the night at 67-44 with 33 seconds on the clock and were in front, 67-46, after three.
  • New Haven would get as close as 14 in the fourth quarter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.) tallied seven points (3-6 FG, 1-1 FT), seven rebounds and a career-high five assists.
  • Sophomore Matilde Baron (Vicenza, Italy) posted four points (2-3 FG) and three rebounds.
  • Freshman Madison Hughes (Columbia, Conn.) added four points (2-3 FG) and two boards.
  • Freshman Ava Winterburn (Goffstown, N.H.) chipped in three points (1-1 FG, 1-1 3-FG) and two rebounds.
  • Graduate student Macy Spinks (Luton, U.K.) recorded two points (1-6 FG), three rebounds and four assists.
  • Southern New Hampshire outshot New Haven, 56.4 percent (31-55) to 34.3 percent (24-70), including 40 percent (6-15) to 28.6 percent (6-21) from beyond the arc. The Penmen were also plus-5 from the stripe and shot it better, 87.5 percent (14-16) to 81.8 percent (9-11).
  • The Penmen narrowly captured the glass (36-35) and the paint (32-30), scored more points on the fast break (25-4), received more scoring from their bench (15-9) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (21/13-17/10), while the Chargers scored more points off turnovers (13-12) and second chance points (12-9).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has won eight of its last 10, including four-in-a-row.
  • New Haven leads the all-time series 37-26, but the Penmen have won six of the last seven meetings, including four straight. SNHU has also won three of the last four at home.
  • SNHU is now 57-20 (.740) since the start of the 2021-22 season, including 27-10 (.730) away from the Stan Spirou Field House.
  • Timberlake passed Sloane Sorrell (2009-13; 1,460) for third place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,461 points. Next up on the list is Julie Dabrowski (1986-90) with 1,713 points.
  • The Penmen (12-3) are in a tie for second place in the NE10 with Assumption University, trailing only first-place Bentley University (14-1).
  • The Penmen held their annual Pink Day, partnering with CMC's Breast Care Center to help raise breast cancer awareness.

  • The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Feb. 7 (5:30 p.m.) when they take on Bentley University.
  • The next home game for SNHU is Saturday, Feb 10 (1:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Adelphi University at the Field House in a game that will air live on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports New Hampshire 930-AM.
