SNHU softball hit three home runs as it opened the season in Florida Saturday with a pair of losses to strong teams from Minnesota.

GAME 1:  WINONA STATE 9-5
  • This was the first-ever meeting with Winona State, although the teams had been scheduled to meet two years ago.
  • The Warriors scored runs in each of the first two innings and then took advantage of some miscues to score five times in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • The first Penmen runs of the season put SNHU up 2-1 in the top of the second inning.  Senior Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) singled, and sophomore Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) homered to center field.
  • SNHU would add another run in the frame as senior Ari Ferrier (Middleboro, Mass.) followed the home run with a walk, and junior Jordyn Resetar (Hanover, Pa.) singled.  A double by sophomore Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) drove in Ferrier.
  • The other two runs for the Penmen came across in the top of the sixth inning.  Freshman Charlotte Simpson (Biddeford, Maine) reached on a hit-by-pitch and Ferrier homered.
  • Senior Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs, but only one earned..  Simpson allowed two runs in 2.1 innings in her collegiate debut in relief.
GAME 2: MINNESOTA STATE- MANKATO 7-5
  • The Mavericks held a 3-1 lead going to the seventh inning before each team put four on the board.
  • SNHU scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth when senior Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine) hit her first home run of the season.
  • The Penmen mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • Resetar had an RBI triple for one run and then scored on a single by Feldman to make it 7-3.
  • Dickinson knocked in two more with a single that cut the gap to 7-5, but SNHU could not draw any closer.
  • Junior Amelia Freitas (Plymouth, Mass.) started the game for the Penmen, working 6.2 innings and senior Hannah DeRock (Hunt, N.Y.) finished up.
  • The Mavericks lead the all-time series with SNHU 3-0 – the teams had last met twice in Florida in 2005.
