Strong pitching and timely hitting carried baseball to a doubleheader sweep at Southern Connecticut State Friday in the first Northeast-10 games for the Penmen.

GAME 1:Â SNHU 2-1 (11 inn.)
- The teams played through nine scoreless innings before the first run of the game put SNHU in front 1-0 in the top of the tenth on a double by Vargas Segura.
- The Penmen threatened in the second inning which started with singles by Jake Pisano and Jake Risedorf.Â
- Pisano's second hit of the game, a single in the top of the ninth, gave SNHU a baserunner but again did not score.
- Risedorf took over on the mound after DeMaro went the first eight.
- Southern Connecticut had two men on base in the bottom of the ninth inning after a single and intentional walk, but Risedorf struck out Jake Chacho to end the threat.
- Senior Dylan O'Sullivan (Manchester, N.H.) started the top of the tenth with a single, and Freshman Evan Kaplo (Bedford, N.H.) came on to run. A sacrifice by sophomore Steven Kienzle (Holbrook, N.Y.) gave the Penmen a runner in scoring position with one out.
- Vargas Segura ripped a double to left center to score the first run of the game.
- A single and a sacrifice gave the Owls a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the tenth. Chad Fedeli ripped a two-out single to right to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Penmen pushed back in front 2-1 in the top of the 11th inning. Senior Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) singled and Pisano bunted him to second.  A single by Risedorf plated the winning run.
- Trumpour took over on the mound for the bottom of the 11th and worked around a one-out single by Mike Talavera for the save.
NOTES
- Southern Connecticut starter Mike Szturma worked 7.2 scoreless innings, allowing five hits. He walked one and struck out seven.
- DeMaro's eight innings were a career-best and his season ERA drops to 0.93.
- The 11-inning game was the longest for the Penmen since a 13-inning affair against Bentley on April 25, 2021.
GAME 2: SNHU 7-0
- The Penmen scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single for junior Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.).Â
- Risedorf singled to start the inning, advancing to second on a passed ball, and scoring on the hit.
- Singles by freshman Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) and Lavigne started the top of the sixth inning. O'Sullivan, pinch-hitting, doubled in Wachter.
- Vargas Segura singled home Lavigne and pinch-runner graduate student Luca Giallongo (Mt. Shasta, Calif.) for a 4-0 lead.
- The Penmen added three more in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Wachter and a two-run single by Fernandez.
NOTES
- Moreno played for the first time since the season-opening Houston trip. He served as the designated hitter in both games for the Penmen.
- Trumpour went the first five innings of the second game, allowing three hits, and striking out six.
- Graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) went the final two innings, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout.
- Vargas Segura has reached safely in 19 straight games and Lavigne has an 18-game on-base streak.
- Southern Connecticut leads the all-time series 50-28, but the Penmen have won the last 12 meetings.
UP NEXT
- SNHU will head back to Connecticut to face the University of New Haven for a doubleheader on Monday, March 25 (noon).
- The first scheduled game at Penmen Field will be next Wednesday, March 27 against Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m.
