Penmen Split High-Scoring Doubleheader at New Haven

Freshman Nater Wachter Drives In Five in 11-6 Game Two Win

Freshman Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) went 3-for-3 with five RBIs as SNHU topped New Haven 11-6 to earn a split of an NE10 doubleheader on Monday.  The Chargers won the opener 15-5.

GAME 1:  NEW HAVEN 15-5

  • The Penmen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Vargas Segura walked, stole second and third, scoring on a groundout by Pisano.
  • SNHU scored again in the second frame.  Senior Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) reached on an error, sophomore Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) singled, and sophomore Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) walked to load the bases.  A single by Vargas Segura drove in Moreno and Wouters followed with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Penmen made it 4-0 in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Vargas Segura, driving in Lavigne, who had singled.
  • The Chargers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Cam McGugan and Joseph Frazzetta off SNHU sophomore starter Zach Brassill (North Hampton, N.H.)
  • New Haven rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits.  The Chargers added two more in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.  
  • SNHU picked up a run in the top of the seventh inning.  Wouters walked, advanced on a fly out, and scored on a double by Pisano.
  • New Haven added six more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

NOTES

  • Brassill worked 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs.  Six relievers followed Brassill.
  • The Chargers had 13 hits and drew 11 walks in the first game.   Four wild pitches also factored into New Haven's scoring.
  • Vargas Segura had three of SNHU's eight hits in the first game with two singles and a double, driving in two runs.

GAME 2: SNHU 11-6

  • The Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after loading the bases with a couple of walks and an infield single.  Cole Maucere doubled to plate two runs.
  • The Penmen would bat around twice in the game, scoring six runs in the third and five runs in the top of the sixth.
  • In the third, four straight reached to start the inning with a single by Wouters cutting the Charger lead to 2-1.
  • Burgos delivered a two-run single and Wachter knocked in two with a double.
  • O'Sullivan followed with a single to make it 6-2.
  • New Haven scored single runs in the third and fourth to make it 6-4.
  • The Penmen sent ten men to bat in the top of the sixth which included an RBI single by Reisdorf, a three-run double by Wachter, and an RBI single by O'Sullivan.

NOTES

  • Lendrum went the first six innings for the Penmen, allowing six runs, but just two earned. 
  • Graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) finished up for the Penmen.
  • Vargas Segura, who's hitting .383, has reached safely in 21 straight games.  He has 31 hits and 22 walks with a .519 OBP.
  • Lavigne has reached safely in 20 consecutive games.
  • New Haven leads the all-time series 39-18 although the Penmen have won two of the last three games.

UP NEXT

  • SNHU's scheduled home game with Saint Anselm College on Wednesday (3/27) has been postponed until a later date.
  • The Penmen hope to play the first games of the season at Penmen Field on Saturday (March 30) against Assumption University.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at Noon.
