Game 2: RV Southern New Hampshire University 10, American International College 2 (7 inn.)

Sophomore Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) had a shutout going in the final inning of game two after the Penmen offense erupted for eight in the first inning, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team split a doubleheader with American International College on Sunday at Penmen Field. The Yellow Jackets rolled to a 14-6 win in the opener, before the Penmen bounced back with a 10-2 victory in the second game.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • DeMaro – 7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 1 BB (win (2-2) game 2)
  • Senior Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) – 4-for-8, 2 RBI, 3 R, HR, BB, SB
  • Graduate student Jaime Roldan (Boston, Mass.) – 2-for-4, RBI, 2 R, HR
  • Freshman Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) – 3-for-6, 3 RBI, R, 2 2B, 2 BB
  • Sophomore Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) – 2-for-6, 4 RBI, 2B, 2 BB
  • Senior Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) – 2-for-6, RBI, 3 R, 4 BB
  • Sophomore Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) – 0-for-0, 2 R, 4 BB
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • American International jumped on sophomore Zach Brassill (No. Hampton, N.H.) with four hits in the top of the first, taking advantage of a walk and an error to push three across.
  • Southern New Hampshire grabbed one back in the home half when Moreno led off with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.), who reached on an error.
  • A leadoff hit batter, an error and an RBI single made it 4-1 in favor of AIC and knocked Brassill from the game. Graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) took over and allowed a pair of inherited runners to score to make it 6-1. Gitschier had what should have been four straight outs, but another error – SNHU's fourth in the first two innings – allowed an extra run to cross.
  • The Yellow Jackets made it 8-1 in the third on a two-run home run by Owen Clancy.
  • Moreno used his wheels to score the second Penmen run in the botton of the inning when he walked, went to second on a wild pitch, but then advanced to third when the catcher's throw trickled into the outfield and scored when the second baseman's throw skipped by the third baseman.
  • The Penmen inched closer in the fifth on a solo blast to left off the bat of Roldan, but a two-run shot over the bullpen in right by Chad Lavelle widened the AIC lead to 10-3 in the top of the sixth.
  • SNHU narrowed the gap with a three-run sixth. A sacrifice fly from freshman Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.), RBI double to left by Valera and a bases-loaded walk to Risedorf brought in the runs, but the Penmen would leave them full.
  • AIC made it a five-run game in the seventh on Clancy's second long-ball of the game, a solo shot to center that brought the score to 11-6.
  • The Yellow Jackets tacked on three more in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run homer to center from Jackson Haker.
INSIDE THE BOX – GAME ONE
  • Roldan (RBI, two runs, home run) and Valera (RBI, two doubles) were both 2-for-4.
  • Risedorf (RBI, walk), Wachter (RBI, double) and Burgos (run, walk) all finished 1-for-4.
  • Pisano went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Moreno was 0-for-2, but scored a pair of runs and walked three times.
  • Brassill (5-2) allowed six runs – four earned – on five hits and a walk in an inning-plus.
  • Gitschier relinquished eight runs – seven earned – on nine hits, while fanning six and not walking a batter, in six-and-a-third innings.
  • Senior Parker Hansen (Granby, Conn.) struck out one and walked one in two-thirds of an inning.
  • Freshman Cam Olivo (Swanzey, N.H.) fired a perfect ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Southern New Hampshire erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the first, as it sent 12 to the plate. RBI singles from Burgos and Wachter, a two-run single by Valera and an RBI base hit from Moreno did the bulk of the damage, before Risedorf stroked a two-run double off the wall in right-center to make it 8-0.
  • SNHU nudged its advantage to 9-0 in the fifth when Risedorf was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and made it an even 10-0 on a solo shot to center off the bat of Burgos in the sixth.
INSIDE THE BOX – GAME TWO
  • Burgos was 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs, a home run and a steal.
  • Moreno (RBI, run, walk) and sophomore Dyrenson Wouters (Oranjestad, Aruba; run, double) were both 2-for-4.
  • Risedorf (three RBI, double, walk, steal) and Valera (two RBI, run, two walks) each went 1-for-2.
  • Wachter finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Lavigne walked in all four of his plate appearances and scored a pair of runs.
  • Pinsano went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks, a run scored and a steal.
  • Junior Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.) was 0-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a steal.
NOTES

  • Roldan's home run is his first of his first season with the Penmen and the sixth of his career.
  • Burgos' long-ball was his 12th of the year and the 15th of his career. He leads the NE10 that category, with the next closest group, which includes Wachter, sitting at seven. Burgos is also tied with Wachter for the league lead in RBI (34).
  • Wouters has five multi-hit performances in his last eight games and is 13-for-31 (.419) at the plate during that stretch.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with AIC, 37-9, and has won 16 of the last 19. The Penmen have won six of the last eight meetings at home against the Yellow Jackets, though this was the first time the two teams met in Manchester since April 8, 2018.
