HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the game in a scoreless deadlock and Southern New Hampshire in search of its first hit of the game in the fifth inning, it recorded it in a big way, as Wouters led off the frame with a solo home run to left. That would open the flood gates as the first of seven straight hits that knocked Saint Anselm starter Quinn MacDonald from the game, including a two-run homer from Valera, and RBI singles from Vargas Segura and Pisano that brought the score to 6-0.
  • SNHU nudged its lead to 7-0 in the sixth when Moreno walked and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Hawks made it a game in the seventh, scoring four runs against four different Penmen pitchers to slash their deficit to 7-4.
  • The Penmen grabbed two back in the home half on bases-loaded walks to Valera and Moreno that made it 9-4.
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Freshman Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.; run, double, walk, steal) and sophomore Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.; run, double) were both 1-for-3.
  • Senior Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) went 1-for-4 and scored a run.
  • Sophomore Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) finished 1-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base. He also finished out the game on the mound, firing a pair of scoreless frames. Risedorf allowed just one hit, while striking out two and walking one.
  • Senior Parker Hansen (Granby, Conn.) was charged with two runs on a hit and a walk in a third of an inning.
  • Freshman Devin Divita (New Hartford, Conn.) relinquished a run on two hits, while striking out one, in a third of an inning.
  • Graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) struck out the only batter he faced to get the Penmen out of the jam in the seventh.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, has won 16 of its last 21, including nine of 11.
  • Wouters' home run is his third of the season and fifth of his career, while Valera's long-ball was the first of his career.
  • Vargas Segura's three steals give him an NE10-best 28 on the season. The Penmen, as a team, have swiped a league-high 80 bags in 35 games – 15 more than the next closest squad.
  • SNHU leads, 68-34, in the all-time series with the Hawks. The Penmen have won 34 of the last 37 meetings dating back to 2013, though Saint Anselm has its three wins in the last 11 games. SNHU has also captured 20-in-a-row at home. The Hawks have not won at SNHU since April 4, 2013 (6-3).
  • The win gives SNHU two more points in the Queen City Cup standings. The Penmen now hold a commanding, 19-13 lead with the 2023-24 year winding down.
