Baseball Gains Split at Adelphi with Win in Game Two

DeMaro fired 3.2 shutout innings, but collected a no-decision

Senior Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and sophomore Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) each knocked in a pair in a game-two victory, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split with Adelphi University at Bonomo Field on Saturday. The Panthers won the opener, 13-7, before the Penmen bounced back with a 5-3 victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Southern New Hampshire moved out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right field from Pisano.
  • Adelphi capitalized on a SNHU error to push a pair across in the home half and take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Penmen leapfrogged in front in the third, with Burgos tying it on an RBI double and later scoring on an RBI groundout from sophomore Dyrenson Wouters (Oranjestad, Aruba).
  • The Panthers again answered in the bottom of the frame, hanging a four-spot to go in front, 6-3.
  • SNHU pulled within one in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by Valera that made it 6-5.
  • Adelphi scored singles runs on wild pitches in the sixth and seventh, to extend its advantage to 8-5.
  • The Penmen trimmed their deficit in the eighth when Valera led off with a double to right-center and Moreno singled to center, before back-to-back hit batters yielded a run. A 6-4-3 double play took some wind out of the SNHU sails, but did plate another run that brought the score to 8-7.
  • Adelphi gathered breathing room in the bottom of the eighth when it took advantage of a dropped fly ball to bring in five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run for Albert Ramos.
INSIDE THE BOX – GAME ONE
  • Valera went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, a run scored, a double and a walk.
  • Vargas Segura was 1-for-3 with an RBI, walk and a steal.
  • Moreno (two run, two walks), Burgos (RBI, run, double, walk) and graduate student Jaime Roldan (Boston, Mass.; double, walk) were all 1-for-4.
  • Freshman Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) finished 0-for-2, but walked three times and scored a run.
  • Sophomore Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) was also 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
  • Wouters was 0-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Zach Brassill (No. Hampton, N.H.) allowed six runs – five earned – on five hits over two-and-a-third innings, while striking out two and walking two.
  • Senior Griffin Gilbert (Concord, N.H.) tossed four-and-a-third innings, giving up two runs on three hits, while punching out a pair and walking three.
  • Graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) relinquished five runs – three earned – on two hits in an inning of work, fanning a pair and walking one.
  • Freshman Devin Divita (New Hartford, Conn.) tossed a third of an inning, striking out one, while giving up a hit and a walk, and allowing an inherited runner to score.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Southern New Hampshire went ahead, 2-0, in the third on a two-out, two-run double down the left field line by Burgos.
  • More clutch, two-out hitting nudged the SNHU lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Pisano delivered an RBI single to right-center.
  • An RBI single to right from Watcher and a Pisano sacrifice fly to left made it a 5-0 game in the seventh.
  • Adelphi attempted to mount a comeback in the home half, scoring three runs, including a two-run blast to left-center by Joe Pellegrino, but flied out to end it with the tying run at the plate.
INSIDE THE BOX – GAME TWO
  • Wouters was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Vargas Segura went 1-for-2 with two runs, a pair of walks and a steal.
  • Pisano (two RBI), Wachter (RBI, run, steal), Valera (run, double), Roldan and sophomore Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) were all 1-for-3.
  • Burgos finished 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a double.
  • Risedorf came on in relief to pitch the final three-and-a-third innings and allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out a pair and not walking a batter.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, had not dropped three straight since it opened the season 0-3 Feb. 2-4.
  • SNHU now leads the all-time series with Adelphi, 15-11, and has won two of the last three meetings, though the Panthers have captured three of the last five. The game-two victory snapped a three-game road slide against Adelphi.
  • DeMaro lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.60.
UP NEXT
  • The Penmen are back in action Friday, April 26 (3:30 p.m.) when they take on cross-town rival Saint Anselm College.
  • The next home game for SNHU is Saturday, April 27 when they play host to Saint Michael's College in a noon twin bill at Penmen Field.
