Junior Jonathan Berling (Moss, Norway) pulled out a huge victory at No. 1 singles to lift the second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team to a 4-1 triumph over Franklin Pierce University in an NE10 Championship semifinal tilt Thursday afternoon at the YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- With the Penmen rallying for three straight singles wins after dropping the doubles point, Berling came out with a 6-4 win in the opening set at No. 1 singles against Joe Herin, but was edged, 7-5, in the second set. Berling responded with another 6-4 win in the deciding third set to send SNHU to the title match.
- Senior Jesse Den Hartog (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) set the tone after the disappointing doubles finish for the Penmen, easing past Ralph Hiebel at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
- Sophomore Melvin Vix (Thionville, France) followed suit with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Preston Gordon.
- Junior Cade Nadeau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) put the Penmen in position to win when he outlasted Noe Martin, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
NOTES
- Sophomore Phillipp Roeder (Aystetten, Germany) was up, 5-1, at No. 6 singles against Orlando Guerrero when the match finished. Graduate student Aron Ouwejan (Wervershoof, Netherlands) was down, 2-6, 1-0, at No. 5 singles versus Alejandro Ortiz.
- Southern New Hampshire has won 12 of its last 15, including seven of eight and four straight.
- SNHU, the defending NE10 Champion, improves to 21-11 in its 18th all-time appearance in the NE10 postseason. The Penmen advance to the title match for the 10th time and will be in search of their seventh NE10 crown when they meet Adelphi University on Friday (May 3). All 10 title match appearances have come in the last 12 NE10 Championships. The Penmen will have now played in seven of the last eight NE10 finals, including three-in-a-row.
- SNHU leads the all-time series with FPU, 19-3, with the Penmen winning five straight, including two regular-season clashes this year. SNHU is also 12-1 in home matches against the Ravens. The Penmen are now 1-1 all-time against FPU in the NE10 postseason.
- SNHU is 1-0 against Adelphi in the NE10 postseason, defeating it in the 2016 title match. The Panthers won both regular-season meetings this season.
