The second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team suffered a heart-wrenching tiebreaker loss in the deciding doubles-point match at the top flight and No. 1-seeded Adelphi University used that lift to capture a 4-0 victory and its first NE10 Championship title Friday afternoon at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Junior Jonathan Berling (Moss, Norway) and graduate student Aron Ouwejan (Wervershoof, Netherlands) doubled up Thiago Negrao and Viktor Hockl, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles, before sophomore Phillipp Roeder (Aystetten, Germany) and freshman Jaden Williams (Green Acres, Fla.) were edged at No. 2 by Hugo Munoz Reinoso and Reece Farrow, 6-4. Senior Jesse Den Hartog (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and junior Cade Nadeau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) then trailed Marko Jovanovic and Thomas Horsley, 6-5, at No. 1, before forcing a tiebreaker to decide the doubles point. SNHU was in front, 5-3, but Adelphi roared back to win, 8-6, and go up, 1-0, in the match.
  • Adelphi then came away victorious at Nos. 1 and 4 singles to extend its lead to 3-0 and put it one win away from a title. Ouwejan dropped the first set at No. 5 to Thomas Horsley, 6-4, and was behind, 5-2, in the second set, but pulled within 5-4 to give the Penmen hope. Horsley would finish it off, however, with another 6-4 win to give Adelphi the crown.
NOTES
  • Den Hartog cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set against Hockl at No. 2, while Hockl answered with a 6-4 victory in the second set. The pair were in their first game of the third set when the match was clinched.
  • Nadeau was up on Casey Recci, 7-5, 3-5, at No. 3 when the match ended, while Roeder was beating Farrow, 7-5, 1-0, at No. 6.
  • Den Hartog and Nadeau were both named to the NE10 All-Championship Team.
  • Southern New Hampshire had won 12 of its last 15, including seven of eight and four straight.
  • SNHU, the defending NE10 Champion, dips to 21-12 (.636) in its 18th all-time appearance in the NE10 postseason. The Penmen were in the title match for the 10th time and were in search of their seventh NE10 crown. All 10 title match appearances have come in the last 12 NE10 Championships. The Penmen have now played in seven of the last eight NE10 finals, including three-in-a-row.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with the Panthers, 11-7. The Penmen have won eight of the last 12 meetings, though Adelphi has now won four of the last five, including both regular-season meetings this year. The Panthers downed the Penmen, 5-2, at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts back on Sept. 22.
  • SNHU is 1-1 against Adelphi in the NE10 postseason. The Penmen defeated the Panthers the 2016 title match.
