Penmen Rally Late, But Fall in 13 to Southern Connecticut in NE10 Tourney

Result:  Southern Connecticut State University 3, SNHU 2 (13 inn.)

Freshman Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) drove in both runs as the Penmen rallied to force extra innings, but Southern Connecticut State pushed a run across in the 13th to beat SNHU 3-2 in the second round of the Northeast-10 Championship Thursday.

TOP PERFORMERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Penmen broke through for the game's first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
  • Resetar doubled and freshman Grace Jenkins (Groton, Conn.) pinch-ran.
  • A single by Lineman moved Jenkins to third.
  • Donovan, pinch-hitting, bunted for a single as Jenkins scored.
  • A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and an RBI single put the Owls up 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning.
  • A double by Dickinson and a single by DiMauro started the bottom of the sixth, but the Penmen could not cash in on the opportunity.
  • In the last of the seventh inning, Resetar walked and freshman Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.) came on to run.
  • After an error and groundout moved DeMoura to third, Donovan's grounder led to the tying run.
  • SNHU had lead-off runners on in the bottom of the tenth and eleventh but did not score.
  • The Owls used two hits and a sacrifice fly by Samantha LaFemina drove in the winning run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Another terrific pitcher's dual developed McKechnie and Southern Connecticut's Jessica Perucki.
  • McKechnie worked into the sixth inning, and senior Hannah DeRock (Hunt, N.Y.), Colbert, and junior Amelia Freitas (Plymouth, Mass.) all pitched for the Penmen.
  • Freitas finished up the 13th inning after the Owls scored the go-ahead run.
  • Ashley Lewis worked seven innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Owls. The Penmen only had one hit off Lewis.
  • SNHU was outhit by the Owls 10-7.
  • The Penmen played 13 innings without making an error while Southern Connecticut had three.
  • SNHU went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position while the Owls were 3-for-14.
NOTES:
  • Donovan only had one RBI during the regular season.
  • The game was the longest for the Penmen since a 13-inning contest with Assumption on April 23, 2022.
  • It was the longest game in the Northeast-10 Championship since a Southern Connecticut win over Adelphi in 2010. 
  • Southern Connecticut leads the all-time series 47-21-1, although the Penmen had won three straight, including both games during the 2024 regular season.
  • The Owls had finished in a three-way tie with Saint Rose and Saint Michael's for the final playoff spot.  They had defeated #5 seed Franklin Pierce Tuesday in the first round.
  • #6 seed Saint Anselm defeated #3 Pace 3-0 on Thursday.  The Hawks will play #2 Assumption - and the Owls will meet #1 Adelphi in Friday's semifinal games.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The NCAA will announce the field for the Division II Softball Championship on Monday, May 6 at 10:00 a.m.  Regional competition will begin Thursday, May 9 and championship games will take place May 19-25 in Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park in Longwood, FL.
