Score: Assumption University 23, RV Southern New Hampshire University 2
Records: SNHU 31-17, Assumption 18-28

Sophomore Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) went 2-for-4 and tossed a pair of perfect innings, but the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team, the top seed in the Northeast Division, absorbed a 23-2 defeat against the Northeast Division's No. 4 seed, Assumption University, on Tuesday afternoon at Penmen Field in the first round of the NE10 Championship.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Risedorf – 2-for-4; 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB
  • Junior Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.) – 1-for-1, R, BB, 2 SB
  • Freshman Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) – 2-for-3, BB
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Assumption drew first blood in the top of the first, taking advantage of an error to push across an unearned run on an RBI single.
  • Southern New Hampshire tied it in the home half when Vargas Segura singled through the right side, stole second and third, and scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.).
  • Assumption sent 15 batters to the plate in the second, scoring nine runs on nine hits and three walks. The Greyhounds went ahead on an RBI base hit before a three-run double by Jack Barry made it 5-1 and knocked sophomore starter Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) from the game. The bullpen did not fare much better, as two relievers combined to allow four runs on four hits and three walks to stretch the Assumption lead to 10-1.
  • The Greyhounds widened the gap to 14-1 with four runs in the third – three of which were unearned following a pair of Penmen errors.
  • Assumption added to its lead with a six-run fourth, capitalizing on another error to bring in five unearned runs and make it 20-1.
  • The visitors tacked on two more in the fifth and one in the sixth to nudge the lead to 23-1 before the Penmen bullpen stabilized.
  • SNHU pushed one across in the ninth on an RBI fielder's choice from graduate student Luca Giallongo (Mt. Shasta, Calif.).
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Junior Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Sophomore Dyrenson Wouters (Oranjestad, Aruba; walk) and freshman Evan Kaplo (Bedford, N.H.) were both 1-for-1.
  • Redshirt-freshman Ruben Fernandez (Providence, R.I.) went 1-for-2.
  • DeMaro relinquished six runs – five earned – on seven hits over an inning-and-a-third, striking out one and walking a batter.
  • Graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.) gave up four runs on four hits and two walks in a third of an inning.
  • Senior Griffin Gilbert (Concord, N.H.) was charged with 10 runs – only two earned – on seven hits, while punching out five and walking three.
  • Freshman Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) allowed three runs – two earned – on four hits in three innings, striking out one and walking a pair.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Poll, had won eight of its last nine, including three straight.
  • SNHU, in its 11th appearance in the NE10 Championship, falls to 21-11 (.656) all-time, including 2-2 against Assumption. This is the third time in the last five NE10 postseasons, and second straight, the top-seeded Penmen lost the first round contest.
  • The 23 runs are the most SNHU has given up in a game since a 23-6 loss to Molloy University on March 18, 2005, while the 22 hits are the most the Penmen have allowed since Colorado Mesa University tallied up 22 in a 22-5 win Feb. 14, 2020. The 21-run margin of defeat is also the worst for the Penmen since a 25-3 loss to Mercyhurst University on March 1, 1999.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with the Greyhounds, 52-26-2. The Penmen had won 13 of the last 15 and seven of eight entering the day. They had also captured 13 of the last 14 at Penmen Field.
  • Vargas Segura continues to pace the league with 42 steals, which ties him for the seventh most in a single season in NE10 history.
UP NEXT
  • The Penmen will now await their fate for an NCAA East Regional Championship berth. The NCAA Selection Show airs Sunday, May 12 (10:30 p.m.) on NCAA.com.
