Penmen Win NE10 Opener 1-0 over Southern Connecticut

Junior Philipp Herrmann (Bruckmuehl, Germany) snuck a header by the Southern Connecticut goalie in the 78th minute to lift SNHU Men's Soccer to a 1-0 win in the Northeast-10 Conference opener Saturday.  Senior goalie Preston Neal (Windham, NH) made four saves in the shutout.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire had a man advantage after the Owls took a red card in the 17th minute of the first half.
  • The Penmen had several scoring chances just before the game-winning goal.  Graduate student Dani Gonzalez (Llanera, Spain) hit the right post with one shot. 
  • Fuentes saw his header tipped off the crossbar but bounced back to Herrmann who scored the goal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU outshot SCSU 18 to nine. Shots on goal also favored the Penmen, ten to five.
  • The Penmen also lead the Owls in corners, having four opportunities to Southern Connecticut's one.
  • Neal saved all four shots faced, while Owl goalie Devin Juan went nine for ten.
  • Graduate student Rafa Escobedo (Santander, Spain) had a defensive save for the Penmen.
NOTES
  • Herrmann scored his third goal of the season and now leads the team in goals.
  • Neal recorded his second clean sheet of the year, which is also his eleventh career shutout.   SNHU has outscored its opponents 14-2 for the season.
  • The Owls lead the all-time series with 30 wins, 21 losses, and eight ties.
  • SNHU is 135-38-24 (.746) over its last 197 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.

  • SNHU will play at Saint Michael's College on Wednesday (Sept.. 25) at 7:00 p.m. in Northeast-10 play.
  • The Penmen will take on American International College next Saturday, September 28 as part of an Ouellette Stadium doubleheader with the SNHU women.  The men's game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
