Women's Tennis Blanks Saint Michael's, 7-0, to Begin Season

Senior Katelyn Nichols (Manchester, N.H.) won both of her matches, including a win-clinching singles victory, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team shut out Saint Michael's College, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in its season opener at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Nichols defeated Natalie Meiler, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6 singles and also teamed with sophomore Nadya Lyekontseva (Kyiv, Ukraine) to double up Katie Rocha and Molly Gannon, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.
  • Lyekontseva topped Gannon, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
  • Sophomore Justina Haver (Taipei, Taiwan) scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Emma Gredenhag at No. 1 singles. She and freshman Lois Tsui (Amsterdam, Netherlands) also shut out Jedidah Xu and Kasey Johnson, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles.
  • Tsui made quick work of Xu, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
  • Sophomore Dajana Abadzic (Weinstadt, Germany) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles against Annabelle Aldrete. She and graduate student Zuzanna Krygier (Poznan, Poland) clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph over Gredenhag and Aldrete at No. 1 doubles.
  • Krygier silenced Rocha, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire wins its season opener for the sixth straight year.
  • The Penmen lead the all-time series with Saint Michael's, 21-8, and have now won 12 straight meetings. SNHU has also won 12-in-a-row at home against the Purple Knights. The Penmen have also captured seven of the last eight meetings, including six-in-aa-row, by a score of 7-0.

  • The Penmen return to action Sunday (Sept. 8) at noon when they take on the College of the Holy Cross.
  • SNHU is back home Wednesday, Sept. 25 (3 p.m.) when it plays host to American International College at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
