The Southern New Hampshire University men's ice hockey team scored three times in the second period and netted a pair of short-handed goals on the way to a 5–2 Northeast 10 victory over Assumption University on Friday night. Five different Penmen found the back of the net, including first-career goals from freshman forward Gavin Simon (Monticello, Minn.) and sophomore winger Jory Veenstra (Kansas City, Mo).
The win sets up a Saturday rematch between the two teams, also in Worcester.
KEY MOMENT
With SNHU protecting a 2–1 lead midway through the second period, senior center Brendan Lynch (Nepean, Ont.) delivered the turning point. Killing a penalty, Lynch connected on his first career short-handed goal with an assist to Simon.
NOTES
- Simon posted a two-point night, recording his first collegiate goal on a late short-handed empty-netter and adding an assist earlier in the game.
- Veenstra buried his first career goal at 5:13 of the second period, finishing off a feed from freshman Bryan Kim (Calgary, Alberta), who picked up his first collegiate point on the play.
- Sophomore Kenny Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) also recorded his first career point with an assist on SNHU's opening goal, scored by senior Ryan Pomposelli (Needham, Mass.) at 1:43 of the second period.
- Junior goaltender Sean Guerin (Chicago, Ill.) was outstanding, stopping 37 of 39 shots to earn the win.
- Senior Kurt Watson (London, Ont.) added a third-period goal, his third of the season.
- SNHU went 0-for-5 on the power play but struck twice while short-handed. Assumption had the game's lone power-play goal in six opportunities.
- The Penmen take a 45-44-5 lead all-time vs. the Greyhounds.
