Westfield State Slips Past SNHU 3-2 In Hockey Fights Hunger Game

Devlin Tallies Twice For Penmen Tuesday in Woburn, Mass.

The Southern New Hampshire University men's ice hockey team came up just short in a 3–2 loss to Westfield State on Tuesday evening in the"Hockey Fights Hunger" game at the O'Brien Rink in Woburn, Mass.. Fans from both programs contributed hundreds of donated food items as part of the community event.

On the ice, the Penmen erased an early deficit and traded goals with the Owls across a fast-paced matchup that featured 87 combined shots.

KEY MOMENT

Junior Stone Devlin (W. Falmouth, Mass.) scored both Penmen goals, converting a slap shot off a rebound in the second period, and adding a short-handed goal midway through the third stanza.    It was his first multi-goal game for SNHU.

NOTES
  • Freshman Jory Veenstra (Kansas City, Mo.) took the shot that hit the post and caromed to Devlin for the first goal to tie the game at 1-1 just 35 seconds into the second period.
  • Junior goaltender Sean Guerin (Chicago, Ill.) made a season-high 46 saves, including 21 in the third period as the Penmen fought through a major penalty.  Guerin's career-high of 50 saves came as a freshman.
  • The short-handed goal was SNHU's third of the season - the team has converted two power-play goals.  The Penmen went 0-for-1 with an extra man on Tuesday night.
  • Emile Pichette scored twice for the Owls, and Aiden Winslow had 36 saves.
  • The game drew 211 fans for the "Hockey Fights Hunger" effort, with all food collected to benefit regional food assistance partners.
  • This is the second time the programs have met in Woburn.  SNHU won the first "Hockey Fights Hunger" game in 2023.  The all-time series is tied at 4-4.
