The Southern New Hampshire University men's ice hockey team earned a 3–1 Northeast 10 victory over Post University on Friday night at The Ice Den, powered by a key second-period goal from senior forward Kurt Watson (London, Ont.) and a strong team defensive effort. The win came on SNHU's annual Teddy Bear Toss night, with all donated bears being collected for Jamie's Joy and the Manchester Police Athletic League (MPAL).
KEY MOMENT
With the Penmen looking to break a scoreless deadlock, Watson delivered the spark at 14:12 of the second period. The senior scored on the rebound of a slap shot by freshman Gavin Simon (Monticello, Minn.) and sophomore Kyle Slingerland (Stittsville, Ont.) also earned an assist. The goal gave SNHU a 1–0 advantage and ignited the crowd as teddy bears rained onto the ice in celebration.
NOTES
- Watson's goal was his fourth of the season, which leads the team.
- Senior Brendan Lynch (Nepean, Ont.) scored the eventual game-winner on a power play at 15:48 of the third, finishing a setup from senior Ryan Pomposelli (Needham, Mass.) and sophomore Darby McCarthy (Whitefish, Mont.).
- Slingerland sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 18:23.
- Junior goaltender Sean Guerin (Chicago, Ill.) turned aside 27 shots to earn the victory.
- SNHU went 1-for-2 on the power play and outshot Post 32–28.
- The Penmen blocked 14 shots and won 59 percent of faceoffs.
- SNHU improves to 23-6 all-time against the Eagles, with wins in 10 of the last 11 meetings.
