Lavigne Drives In Three, DeMaro Records CG as SNHU Baseball Sweeps Staten Island

Penmen Win Opener 4-1 and Nightcap 5-1 Saturday

Junior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) drove in three runs and junior Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game three-hitter as SNHU won 5-1 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the College of Staten Island Saturday.  The Penmen won the opener 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 1
  • The Penmen scored twice in the bottom of the second inning.  McNamara was hit, Fernandez walked, and an infield single by Leone loaded the bases.  One run scored on a passed ball and single by senior Jancarlos Colon (Santa Isabel, P.R.) allowed Fernandez to score for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Dolphins picked up a run in the top of the third frame on an RBI double by Chris Polemeni.
  • In the last of the fifth inning, a single by Risedorf and a double by freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.) made it 3-1.
  • Graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for the game's final run.
  • Risedorf allowed seven hits - three were infield singles.  He also induced two double-play balls to end two frames.
  • Varney made his first appearance for the Penmen and turned in a save by recording the final seven outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 2
  • DeMaro's one rough inning was the first when Staten Island loaded the bases, but didn't score.  DeMaro helped his own cause with a pick-off in the frame.  
  • The Dolphins did not record a hit after the first inning until a double in the sixth when they scored a run.
  • Lavigne delivered a two-run single in the top of the second inning and drove in another run in a three-run fourth for the Penmen.
  • The fourth started with a single by McNamara and a wild pitch, Fernandez beat out an infield single and Lavigne singled.
  • An error on a pick-off attempt allowed Fernandez to score and Lavigne to move to third.  
  • Sophomore Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) drove in the final run in the fourth inning with a single, plating Lavigne.
NOTES
  • The Penmen lead the all-time series with Staten Island 3-1 with the first meetings last season in Myrtle Beach.
  • SNHU is ranked 10th in the nation in the NCBWA poll released on February 19.  
  • The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach is hosting teams from the NCAA Division II East Region over four days (Feb. 20-Feb. 23) including several from the Northeast-10 Conference.
