Winterburn Scores 17 As Women's Basketball Concludes Season in NE10 Quarterfinals

Penmen Drop 64-50 Decision to Bentley Sunday

Sophomore Ava Winterburn (New Boston, N.H.) matched a career-best with 17 points, and junior Meghan Gordon (Attleboro, Mass.) had 15, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team fell to top-seed Bentley University 64-50 in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Championship on Sunday afternoon.

  • Gordon - 18 points (6-11 FG, 6-6 FT), 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal
  • Winterburn - 13 points (6-6 FG, 1-2 FT), 8 rebounds
  • Senior Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) - 6 points (3-6 FG), 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block
  • Graduate student Stephanie Davis (Windham, N.H.) – 3 points (1-7 FG, 1-4 FT), 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals
  • Sophomore Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.) - 2 points (1-5 FG), 2 rebounds, 5 assists
KEY MOMENTS   
  • Winterburn had a three-pointer on a fast break for the Penmen with 2:41 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 10-10 but Bentley quickly created some separation with an 11-0 run before a jumper by Meghan Gordon with 7:26 to play in the second quarter.
  • A three-pointer by freshman Kameron St. Pierre (Swansea, Mass.) stopped another 11-0 run for Bentley, and SNHU trailed 36-22 at the half.
  • The Penmen were able to trim the lead to 45-35 in the third quarter thanks to a pair of layups for Gordon.
  • SNHU was not able to get the lead down in the fourth quarter despite hitting on 7-of-12 field goals (58.3%).  Gordon had seven in the quarter, and DeVries hit a pair of field goals.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • St. Pierre had three points, and the Penmen received two points each from sophomore Madison Hughes (Columbia, Conn.), freshman Taylor Brennan, and junior Matilde Baron (Vicenza, Italy).
  • Maggie Whitmore led the Falcons with 24 points, also pulling down five rebounds and handing out three assists.  Amanda Kabantu had 10 rebounds and 7 assists to go with 6 points.
  • The Penmen outshot the Falcons 44.0% to 34.8 % although Bentley took 16 more shots.  SNHU was 22-for-50 overall, 4-for-17 from three, and 2-for-6 from the line.
  • Bentley finished 23-for-66 overall, 6-for-31 from three, and 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.
  • Each team had 36 rebounds.
  • Bentley had 12 turnovers leading to seven SNHU points while the Falcons scored 21 points over the 25 turnovers by the Penmen.
  • The Falcons had a slim edge on bench points (11-9) and the Penmen had the edge on fast break points (9-7).
NOTES
  • SNHU, the No. 9 seed, played in the Northeast-10 Quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive season.
  • Bentley, ranked third in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Coaches Poll, have won 24 consecutive games and have the longest win streak in the nation in Division II.   The Falcons have won the last three NE10 Championships and 23 overall.
  • The Falcons lead the all-time series 52-9 with wins in seven of the last eight, including all three matchups this season.  Bentley has also won all five post-season match-ups between the schools.
  • SNHU drops to 72-42 (.631) since the start of the 2021-22 season.  The Penmen conclude the 2024-25 season at 12-16.
  • This was the first post-season meeting between the SNHU women and Saint Michael's since 1991 when the Penmen won 80-68 on the way to the ECAC Tournament Championship.
