Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.) went 3-for-4 and knocked in a run, but the ninth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team closed out its early-season trip to Cary with a 4-3 defeat against Dominican (N.Y.) University on Sunday morning at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern New Hampshire pushed across the game's first run when Wachter hit a two-run double to left and scored on Marshall's single to right.
- Dominican tied the game in the third against junior starter Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) and went up, 3-1, with a pair in the fourth.
- SNHU grabbed one back in the sixth when Valera led off with a double, later moved to third after back-to-back walks and scored on a wild pitch.
- The Chargers, however, responded with one in the home half to re-gain their two-run lead at 4-2.
- Junior Chris Leone (Newton, N.J.) led off the top of the eighth with a walk, moved to second on another walk and went to third on a fielder's choice, before scoring on a sacrifice fly by graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.).
- The Penmen made it interesting in the ninth by putting the tying run in scoring position, but a game-ending strikeout sealed it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Leone was 1-for-4 with a walk, a double and a run scored.
- DeMaro finished 1-for-5 at the plate, while on the mound he gave up four runs – three earned – on nine hits and two walks over six innings, striking out one.
- Freshman Angel Baez (Leominster, Mass.) tossed a pair of scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and striking out a batter.
- Burgos was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
- Sophomore Jacob Albert (Pelham, N.H.) went 0-for-2, but drew a pair of walks.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked ninth in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Coaches Poll, as well as 11th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and 13th in the D2 Baseball Top 25 Rankings, has won six of its last nine games, but drops its second straight for the first time this season.
- The Penmen had entered the contest 6-0 all-time against Dominican and were outscoring them, 76-24.
- SNHU is outscoring its opponents, 91-40, this season.
- Wachter and Colon have now hit safely in nine of 11 games this season and respective six- and five-game hitting streaks.

- The Penmen are off until next weekend when they play a three-game set at East Stroudsburg University, beginning with a Saturday (March 15) doubleheader that begins at noon.
