Freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.), junior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) and graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) all hit home runs, but the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team had its 39-game winning streak against Saint Michael's College halted Saturday with a 7-4 loss to the Purple Knights at Doc Jacobs Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to heavy rains.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.) – 1-for-3, RBI, R, HR, BB
  • Junior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) – 1-for-3, RBI, R, HR, BB
  • Graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) – 1-for-4, RBI, R, HR
  • Freshman Angel Baez (Leominster, Mass.) – 3.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 2 BB
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Michael's struck three times in the bottom of the third, including a two-run homer off the bat of Seth Larson.
  • Solo shots from Marshall and Lavigne in the top of the fourth pulled Southern New Hampshire within 3-2.
  • The Purple Knights added four more in the home half of the fourth to chase Penmen ace Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.) from the game with the score 6-2. The bullpen would allow one of the junior's inherited runners to score to make it 7-2.
  • An RBI double from sophomore Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) in the fifth and Burgos' solo blast in the sixth helped SNHU climb within 7-4.
  • The Penmen advanced a runner to third in two of the final three innings, but never brought the tying run to the plate the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Wachter (RBI, double) and junior Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) were both 1-for-5.
  • Senior Jancarlos Colon (Santa Isabel, P.R.; walk, steal), junior Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.; run) and junior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) all went 1-for-4.
  • Trumpour (4-2) was charged with seven runs on eight hits over three-and-two-thirds innings. He struck out five and walked just one.
  • Graduate student Cam Varney (Manchester, N.H.) allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out a batter, in a third of an inning.
  • Senior Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.) struck out the only batter he faced in the eighth.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25, had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
  • The Penmen fall to 49-3 all-time versus Saint Michael's and had their 39-game winning streak halted. SNHU had also won 16 consecutive games in Colchester. It is the first win in the series for the Purple Knights since April 17, 2013 at home (8-2). SNHU had also scored in double figures in seven straight against SMC, piling up 126 runs (18 runs per game).
  • The SNHU offense had also posted double-digit runs over the last four games, averaging 18 runs per contest.
  • Marshall, who homered for the second straight day, now has 13 on the season, extending his program rookie record and tying him for fifth in the Penmen single-season record book.
  • Lavigne's first long-ball of the season is the fifth of his career.
  • Burgos now has three home runs in his last six games, giving him five on the season and 27 for his career. He is now 10 shy of the all-time record of 37 by Dakota Mulcay (2018-22).
  • It was only the second time in his career Trumpour failed to go at least five innings in a start and first since Feb. 3, 2024 when he allowed three runs in four innings of a 5-4 loss to the University of Central Missouri.
  • Pisano has hit safely in 12 of the 13 games he has played in this season.
  • Colon has a hit in 32 of his 36 games this year, including 11 of his last 12 and eight straight.
