Phillipp Roeder (Aystetten, Germany) rallied for a three-set win in the deciding match at No. 3 singles, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team came from behind for an epic 4-3 triumph against Assumption University on Thursday afternoon at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- With the match tied, 3-3, Roeder's No. 3 singles contest was the deciding tilt. Roeder took the first set against Alec Pijnacker, 6-2, before being edged, 6-7 (4-7), in the second set. Roeder trailed, 5-2, in the third and match-deciding set when he rallied for a 7-5 victory to lift the Penmen to the win.
- Roeder also teamed with sophomore Albert Modol (Lleida, Spain) for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles against Luigi Bassani and Bernardo Balancho to even the doubles score, 1-1.
- SNHU trailed, 3-2, when Modol pulled out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against Bassani to even the match.
- It was 3-1 when freshman Marcos Castaneda (Madrid, Spain) knocked off Balancho, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5 singles to keep the Penmen alive.
- Senior Cade Nadeau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) and sophomore Carlos Molero (Barcelona, Spain) won the Penmen the doubles point by doubling up Herman Aguirre and Jakob Bordt, 6-3, at the top flight.
NOTES
- Freshman Noah Cadilhac (Montpellier, France) dropped a three-set match to Bordt at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
- Southern New Hampshire snaps a two-game skid and moves into third place in the NE10 standings, as it clinches a postseason berth. SNHU will earn the No. 3 seed with a win in the season finale or with at least one Assumption loss in its final two matches.
- SNHU leads the all-time series with Assumption, 18-3, and extends its winning streak against the Greyhounds to 10. The last Assumption win in the series came at SNHU on April 17, 2015 (6-3). The Penmen have also captured eight of nine, including five straight, at home, versus the Greyhounds.
