Down to the Wire: Men's Lacrosse Season Ends In 16-14 Playoff Loss at Pace

Ryan Lynch Scores Four Goals, Joey Gallo Three Saturday

Sophomore Ryan Lynch (Derry, N.H.) scored four goals and redshirt freshman Joey Gallo (Derry, N.H.) added three as Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse turned in one of their strongest performances of the season. A late surge by #3 seed Pace University was just enough to edge the Penmen, 16-14, on Saturday at Northwell Stadium.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Penmen trailed 6-3 after one quarter, but never allowed the Setters to pull away.
  • Brown, Lynch and Wiedemann tallied in the first quarter for the Penmen.
  • The teams traded goals through an entertaining second quarter with the Setters leading 9-7 at halftime.  
  • Dwyer, sophomore Kyle Beckett (Monroe, Conn.), freshman PJ Cunningham (Bronx, N.Y.), and Gallo scored in the second quarter.
  • Consecutive goals by Lynch and sophomore Patrick Roy (North Andover, Mass.) tied the game at 10-10, but Pace responded with three consecutive goals to make it 13-10 after three periods.
  • SNHU was still down by three goals half-way through the fourth quarter but responded with three consecutive goals- two by Gallo, and one by Kostandin on a man-up opportunity, assisted by Lynch, to tie the score.
  • Pace's experience showed in the closing minutes.  A quick goal from the Setters' Colin Reese followed by a backbreaker from Delcan Landers sealed the game as the Penmen's comeback effort fell just short.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Roy was sensational between the pipes, registering 17 saves despite a 53-37 shot advantage in total shots.
  • Townsend battled to win 12 face-offs against a strong a Pace unit.  The Setters won 19 of 31 for the game, including seven of eight in the first quarter.
  • Sophomore Luke Wiedemann (Cheshire, Conn.) - goal, 6 ground balls, caused turnover
  • Graduate student Aidan Boyle (Westfield, Mass.) - 4 grounds balls, caused turnover
  • Sophomore Sean Mandel (Guilford, Conn.) - 4 ground balls, caused turnover
  • Sophomore Zay Koziell (Methuen, Mass.) -2 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers
  • SNHU went 27-for-33 on its clears while Pace was 17-for-25.
  • The Setters had a 56-35 advantage on ground balls and turned the ball over fewer times (24-to-17).
  • The Penmen were 2-for-7 in man-up situations and Pace was 1-for-4.
NOTES
  • Pace has won the last nine meetings with the Penmen and lead the all-time series 19-7.
  • This was third meeting between the teams in the Northeast-10 Championship.  The Penmen won the 2016 game 15-13, and the Setters prevailed in 2004, 20-10.
  • The Penmen earn the #6 seed in the Northeast-10 Championships, qualifying for the tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons.
  • Pace, the #3 seed, is currently ranked #7 in the nation in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, and #9 in the USILA Coaches Poll.
  • Gallo finishes the season as the team's leading scorer (16 goals, 19 assists).
  • Dwyer tallied 19 goals to lead SNHU.
  • Five SNHU athletes scored at least 15 goals this season, all are underclassmen.
