Junior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team held off the University of New Haven for a 7-6 victory Tuesday afternoon at Penmen Field.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Pisano – 1-for-2, 3 RBI
  • Junior Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) – 1-for-2, 2 RBI, R, HR, BB
  • Freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.) – 1-for-2, RBI
  • Graduate student Cam Varney (Manchester, N.H.) – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 0 BB
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern New Hampshire moved out to a 2-0 lead in the first on sacrifice flies by Marshall and Pisano.
  • After Casey Cerruto hit a solo home run to center in the second off freshman starter Angel Baez (Leominster, Mass.), DeMaro one-upped him with a two-run blast into the trees in center to extend the Penmen lead to 4-1.
  • New Haven scraped across a run in the third, before Robert Taylor drove a two-run single up the middle in the fifth to tie the game, 4-4.
  • The bottom of the frame, SNHU grabbed the lead for good when Pisano emptied the bases. He knocked a two-run single to left, but the throw home skipped by the catcher and out of play, allowing a third run to score and make it 7-4.
  • New Haven pushed two unearned runs across in the top of the seventh against junior Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.), but left the go-ahead run at the plate.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.; run), Risedorf (two runs, walk) and graduate student Jake Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.; run, double) were all 1-for-3.
  • Sophomore Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) finished 0-for-1, but walked twice and scored a run.
  • Baez worked the first three innings and allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out two and walking a batter.
  • Sophomore Devin Divita (New Hartford, Conn.) earned the win to improve to 6-0, despite giving up two runs on two hits over two innings, striking out three and walking one.
  • Risedorf was charged with two runs – both unearned – on two hits, while punching out a pair, in an inning of work. He earned his second save of the season.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has won 12 of its last 13, including five straight.
  • The Penmen move to within one game of first-place Franklin Pierce University in the NE10 Northeast Division, with three with the Ravens on tap to end the regular season. A sweep – or two wins and at least one Bentley University loss – would give SNHU the Northeast Division crown and No. 1 seed
  • New Haven leads the all-time series, 39-20, although the teams have split the last 14 meetings and Penmen have won four of the last five games. SNHU has also won six of the last eight contests at home in the series.
  • DeMaro's home run is his first of the season and second of his career.
  • Colon has a hit in 36 of his 41 games this year, including 15 of his last 17, but had his 12-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-3 day.
UP NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Friday, May 2 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Franklin Pierce University at Penmen Field.
