Pace Quiets Baseball in Game 1 of Best-of-Three NE10 Finals, 3-0

SNHU will need to defeat the Setters twice Sunday to win the NE10 crown

Junior Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) turned in a quality start, but the Penmen offense managed just three hit, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team, the No. 3 seed in the NE10 Northeast Division, lost game one of the best-of-three finals series in the NE10 Championship against the No. 2 seed from the Southwest, Pace University, 3-0, Saturday at Bedard Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pace drew first blood in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice groundout to shortstop.
  • The Setters doubled their lead in the sixth when Anthony Labita led off with a solo home run to right.
  • Lendrum gave up a one-out single in the eighth and exited the game with two down in the frame, but graduate student Cam Varney (Manchester, N.H.) allowed the inherited runner to score on a wild pitch.
  • Southern New Hampshire would put a pair on base with two outs in the ninth, but did not score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) finished 1-for-4 with a double.
  • Senior Jancarlos Colon (Santa Isabel, P.R.) and sophomore Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) each went 0-for-2, but drew a pair of walks.
  • Varney officially worked a third of an inning, walking one, throwing a pair of wild pitches and allowing an inherited runner to score.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in the, National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) Division II Top 25, had won 15 of its last 18, including eight of 10 and three of four prior to the loss.
  • SNHU dips to 23-12 (.657) in its 12th appearance in the NE10 postseason, including 1-1 against Pace. The Penmen are in the NE10 final for the fifth time (2014, 2016, 2021, 2022) and entered the day a perfect 5-0 in finals games.
  • The all-time series between SNHU and Pace is now tied, 17-17, though the Penmen have won 12 of the last 17 meetings, including a doubleheader sweep of the Setters at home back on April 25.
  • Lavigne has hit safely in 14 of 15, including nine-in-a-row.
  • Junior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.), who had a hit in 20 of the 23 games he had played in this season entering the contest, had his hitting streak snapped at seven games.
  • Freshman Jackson Marshall (Hooksett, N.H.) had hit safely in seven of his last eight, but saw his hit streak halted at four.
  • Colon has a hit in 41 of his 47 games this year, including 20 of his last 23 and 17 of 19, but had his hitting streak ended at five.
