Penmen Fall To Pace 9-3 In Northeast-10 Championship Series

Setters Sweep Finals to Win Title in Springfield Sunday

Southern New Hampshire University baseball fell 9-3 to Pace University in Game Two of the Northeast-10 Baseball Championship Sunday in Springfield, Mass.  The win clinched the title for the Setters for the second time in three seasons.

  • Junior Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) - 3.2 IP - 5 H - 2 ER - 1 BB - 4 K (in relief)
  • Freshman Angel Baez (Leominster, Mass.) - 1.2 IP - 1 H - 0 ER - 2 K (in relief)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Risedorf gave the Penmen a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to right.
  • Pace responded in the second inning, sending ten batters to plate and scoring five runs.  Three consecutive singles, a pair of bases-loaded walks, a two-run double by Josh Miller, and a run scoring single by Luke Rivara put the Setters up 5-1.
  • The Setters tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Anthony Labita and Dominic Rivera.
  • Pace starter Vincent Civitella retired 10 straight batters before a lead-off double down the left field line by Lavigne to start the fifth inning.  He would score on a single by Burgos to make it 7-2.
  • The Penmen added a run in the sixth against reliever Robert Gilchrist.  A double by Wachter, a passed ball, and a deep fly to center field by Pisano cut the Pace lead to 7-3.
  • Pace tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth, and Eric Santaella came out of the bullpen to pitch two scoreless innings.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Risedorf was the starting pitcher for the Penmen (1.2 IP- 5 ER).  He did retire the Setters in order in the first inning on eight pitches.
  • Junior Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.), sophomore Devin Devita (New Hartford, Conn.), DeMaro and Baez also pitched for SNHU.
  • Pace finished with 16 hits to four for SNHU, 11 of the hits were in the first four innings.
  • Civitella earned the win for Pace.  He improves to 6-2.  
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) Division II Top 25, had won 15 of its last 18, including eight of 10 and three of four heading into the Championship series.
  • SNHU dips to 23-13 (.639) in its 12th appearance in the NE10 postseason, including 1-2 against Pace. The Penmen advanced to the NE10 final for the fifth time (2014, 2016, 2021, 2022).
  • Pace takes an 18-17 lead in the all-time series, though the Penmen have won 12 of the last 18 meetings.  SNHU had swept the regular-season doubleheader from Pace on April 25.
  • Pace wins its second Northeast-10 Championship, and second in the past three seasons.  
  • Lavigne has hit safely in 15 of 16, including ten-in-a-row.
