The 10th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team opened Northeast 10 Conference play in winning fashion, defeating Assumption 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Larkin Field.
Freshman goalkeeper Agustina Miranda Waigand (Miami, Fla.) was outstanding in the cage, turning aside all 14 shots on goal she faced to register her fifth win and second shutout of the season. Goals from junior Amelia Crocombe (Somerset, England) and junior Zoe Demers (Manchester, N.H.) paced the Penmen offense.

KEY MOMENT
  • Crocombe put SNHU on the board just 2:28 into the contest, finishing off a feed from Demers for an early 1-0 lead.
NOTES
  • Crocombe's first-quarter strike was her third goal of the season.
  • Demers doubled the advantage with 9:08 remaining, netting her fifth goal of the year, tipping in a shot from junior Jade Hendriks (Huissen, Netherlands).
  • Hendriks and Crocombe each recorded defensive saves in the opening quarter to help preserve the lead.
  • SNHU was outshot 23-6, but converted both of its shots on goal in each half.
  • The Penmen defense survived 14 Assumption penalty corners, including 10 in the first quarter.
  • SNHU has won five consecutive contests, outscoring opponents 15-2.
  • The win was only the fourth in 15 tries against the Greyhounds.  The Penmen also defeated Assumption on Larkin Field last season, 3-0.
  • The Penmen won the conference opener for the second consecutive and for the third time in the last four seasons, and extended its win streak in conference home games to eight.
