Ice Hockey Drops Opener of Set at Saint Michael's 3-2 Friday night

SNHU outshoots Purple Knights 40-18 and looks ahead to Saturday rematch

Southern New Hampshire University outshot Saint Michael's College 40-18 on Friday night, but the Penmen came up just short in a 3-2 setback at Cairns Arena in the opener of a Northeast 10 weekend series.

KEY MOMENT

SNHU pulled within one midway through the third period when senior Tyler Murray (Barre, Vt.) scored his first goal of the season at 4:19, but Saint Michael's goaltender Evan Plunkett turned aside several late chances to preserve the Purple Knights' win.

NOTES
  • Saint Michael's scored twice in the first period, including a power-play goal at 6:40, to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Penmen responded early in the second period when freshman Aidan Rufa (Massena, N.Y.) scored on the power play at 1:43, assisted by freshman Bryan Kim (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Zach Vickerman (Queensville, Ontario).
  • Saint Michael's regained a two-goal advantage late in the second period on an even-strength tally at 17:58.
  • Murray's third-period goal cut the deficit to 3-2. The goal was assisted by junior Austin Hirschberger (Harwich, Mass.), marking Hirschberger's first assist of the season.
  • SNHU generated sustained pressure in the final minutes and finished the night with a 40-18 edge in shots on goal.
  • Junior Sean Guerin (Chicago, Ill.) made 15 saves in net for the Penmen.
  • SNHU went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Saint Michael's converted on its lone man-advantage opportunity.
  • SNHU is 31-57-7 all-time against Saint Michael's, including a 14-30-3 mark in away games.
