Lynch Hat Trick Ignites Penmen in 6-4 Win Over Rivier

Senior scores three times as SNHU explodes for four third-period goals at The Ice Den

Playing in his 100th career game, senior Brendan Lynch (Nepean, Ont.) scored a hat trick to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 6-4 win over Rivier University on Friday night at The Ice Den. The Penmen scored four times in the third period to pull away after the teams were tied entering the final frame.

KEY MOMENT

After Rivier erased a one-goal deficit early in the third period, SNHU responded with back-to-back goals from freshman Kenny Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Zach Vickerman (Queensville, Ontario) to regain control. Lynch sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final two minutes to complete his hat trick.

NOTES
  • Rivier scored twice in the first period, but SNHU answered with a pair of power-play goals from Lynch in the second period to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Lynch's first goal came at 10:23 of the second period and his second followed just 1:35 later, both with the man advantage.
  • Junior Stone Devlin (W. Falmouth, Mass.) gave the Penmen their first lead with a shorthanded goal at 6:22 of the third period.
  • After Rivier tied the game at 3-3, Thurston scored his first career goal to put SNHU back in front at 15:16, assisted by sophomore Kyle Slingerland (Stittsville, Ontario) and sophomore Ryan Kayser (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).
  • Vickerman added an insurance goal on the power play at 17:01.
  • Lynch finished the night with three goals and was named the game's first star.
  • Kayser recorded three assists, while sophomore Darby McCarthy (Whitefish, Mont.), senior Kurt Watson (London, Ontario), sophomore Josh Russell (Stoney Creek, Ontario), freshman Aidan Rufa (Massena, N.Y.), and freshman Gavin Simon (Monticello, Minn.) each added an assist.
  • Freshman goaltender Trent Boryszczuk (Novi, Mich.) earned the win, stopping 15 shots.
  • SNHU finished 3-for-8 on the power play and outshot Rivier 44-19.
  • The Penmen improve to 2-4 all-time vs. Rivier, snapping a three-game losing streak to the Raiders.
