Penmen post fourth shutout in five matches

Junior Gabriel Castro (León, Spain) scored twice in the opening half to lead the fifth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Saint Michael's College on Wednesday evening at Duffy field.

  • Castro opened the scoring with one second left in the 32nd minute and then doubled the Penmen lead with his second goal 7:17 later.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, is unbeaten through the first 12 matches of the season since it began the 2015 campaign 13-0-0.
  • The Penmen lead the all-time series with the Purple Knights 30-3-4. SNHU is unbeaten over the last eight meetings (6-0-2) and is unbeaten in 20 of the last 21 (17-1-3). The Penmen are unbeaten in four straight at Saint Michael's (3-0-1), as well as nine of the last 10 (7-1-2).
  • SNHU has shut out Saint Michael's in three straight meetings and has not allowed a goal to the Purple Knights since Oct. 4, 2023 – a span of 311:03. The Penmen have also blanked SMC in two straight on the road and last allowed a goal in Colchester on Sept. 28, 2022 for a scoreless streak of 189:10.
  • Fifth year Alvaro Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) did not need to make a save to earn his fifth clean sheet of the season.

  • SNHU outshot Saint Michael's, 25-4, including 14-0 in shots on target. The Penmen also owned an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Penmen are now 171-42-32 (.763) over their last 245 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season. SNHU is also 43-6-9 (.819) over its last 58 matches dating back to 2023.
