Jojo Wallace (Milford, Conn.) pumped in a career- and game-high 32 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team was stunned by Saint Anselm College, which forced overtime on buzzer-beating 3-pointer and swiped an 87-81 victory Tuesday night at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
KEY MOMENTS
- SNHU jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the opening three minutes, led by six points from freshman Jamier Rose (Berwick, Maine), who knocked down two of his career-best four 3-pointers. The Penmen would lead by as many as nine at 18-9 with 13:40 left in the first half, but Saint Anselm used a 13-3 run to take a 22-21 lead with 9:27 on the clock. Four lead changes and a pair of ties ensued before the hosts eventually brought a 36-35 lead to the locker room.
- The Hawks remained in the lead at 46-45 just under 13 minutes left when another Rose triple sparked a 13-5 rush – paced by six from senior Ray Daniels (Las Vegas, Nev.) – that flipped the Penmen back in front at 58-51 with 9:15 remaining. Five straight from the hosts as part of a 9-2 blitz knotted the score at 60-all with 5:13 to go.
- With SNHU in front by one in the final seven seconds, Wallace buried a pair of free throws to make it 70-67, but Saint Anselm inbounded the ball, pushed it the length and Will Davies drilled a step-back 3 from the right wing to send the game to overtime.
- The Hawks opened the extra session with a 3-pointer and led wire-to-wire. The Penmen had a chance, down three at 81-78 with under a minute to go, but they would miss a trey and Saint Anselm hit all six free throws down the stretch to wrap it up.
