Senior Kurt Watson (London, Ont.) scored with 2:47 remaining in regulation, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's ice hockey team came up short against Saint Michael's College, 2-1, Friday night at The Ice Den Arena.

KEY MOMENT
  • AJ Sacco scored his first of two goals for Saint Michael's with just 52 seconds left in the opening period, before doubling the Purple Knight lead with 7:53 to play in the middle period.
  • With an extra attacker on, Watson banged in a puck at the right post at 17:13 of the third to pull SNHU within a goal.
NOTES
  • Watson's goal is his team-leading ninth of the season and the 31st of his Penmen career.
  • Freshman Jory Veenstra (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore Ryan Kayser (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) collected assists on the Watson goal.
  • Junior Collin Berke (Crofton, Md.) made 22 saves in net for SNHU.
  • The Penmen originally pulled Berke with 3:46 left in the third period, put him back in the net following their goal and pulled him again for the final 38 seconds, but could not score.
  • The Penmen finished with a 41-24 advantage in shots and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while SMC was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
  • The Purple Knights improve to 59-31-7 all-time against the Penmen and have won six of the last seven, including five straight. SMC, which is now 3-0 against SNHU this season, has won two straight at The Ice Den.
  • All three meetings between the two teams this season have been decided by a single goal.
  • The win, coupled with a Saint Anselm College loss earlier in the day, clinches the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship for Saint Michael's. Saint Anselm will finish as the No. 3 seed and will host the Penmen, who are locked in as the No. 6 seed, in the first round next Tuesday (Feb. 24).
UP NEXT
  • The Penmen wrap up the regular season Saturday (Feb. 21) against Saint Michael's at 2:40 p.m.
