Baseball Squeezes Past Staten Island 7-5 in 10 innings

Dakota Britt goes 5-for-5 and scores go-ahead run in 10th

When and Where: February 21, 2026 — Griffith Stadium (Ripken Experience), Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Score: Southern New Hampshire University 7, College of Staten Island 5 (10 innings)
Records: SNHU 3-1, CSI 1-2

Southern New Hampshire University baseball executed a perfect squeeze play to score two runs in the top of the 10th inning to secure a 7-5 victory over the College of Staten Island on Saturday night at the Ripken Experience, closing out its Myrtle Beach trip with a 3-1 mark.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Tied 5-5 entering the 10th, senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) jumpstarted the decisive rally with a bunt single and advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch. After a walk loaded the bases, junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) stepped in and Britt broke for home.  Valera dropped down a perfectly placed bunt that brought home both Britt and senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.), giving the Penmen a 7-5 advantage.
  • In the bottom half, Staten Island put two runners on, but redshirt junior Ben Gilbert (Altamont, N.Y.) entered and induced a game-ending double play to seal his first save of the season.
NOTES
  • Britt delivered a standout performance, going 5-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to pace the 14-hit attack.
  • The Penmen erased a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the eighth inning. Senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.) singled home a run before graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) and Britt followed with RBI singles to give SNHU a 5-4 lead.
  • Staten Island answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth, on a squeeze play, to force extra innings.
  • Redshirt junior Zach Brassill (North Hampton, N.H.) started and allowed just one earned run over 5.1 innings, striking out six. Freshman Shawn Taylor (Sewell, N.J.) earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning, and Gilbert recorded the final three outs in the 10th.
  • SNHU used seven pitchers in the game, including a strong 2.1-inning relief stint from sophomore Angel Baez (Leominster, Mass.), who struck out three while allowing one run.
  • With Sunday's scheduled game against St. Thomas Aquinas College canceled, the Penmen conclude their Myrtle Beach trip at 3-1.
  • SNHU is now 4-1 all-time against the Dolphins with all five meetings taking place over the past three seasons at the Ripken Experience.
  • Britt went 12-for-17 (.706) in Myrtle Beach with three doubles, four walks, a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases.
  • It was a long night in Myrtle Beach. Originally scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch, the game did not begin until five hours later due to rain, and it lasted four hours and 22 minutes, ending at 11:59 p.m.
UP NEXT
  • SNHU is next scheduled to travel to Flemington, N.J., for a pair of doubleheaders against D'Youville University next Saturday and Sunday.
