SNHU Ice Hockey erased a pair of one-goal deficits but ultimately fell, 5-4, in overtime to first-place Assumption University on Friday night in Northeast 10 action at The Ice Den.
KEY MOMENT
After SNHU tied the game on a power-play goal by senior Ryan Pomposelli (Needham, Mass.) midway through the third period, Assumption's Brett Cunningham scored just 57 seconds into overtime to secure the victory for the Greyhounds.
NOTES
- Assumption opened the scoring on the power play early in the first period, but SNHU answered at 5:20 when junior Coleman Nee (Arlington, Mass.) evened the game with his second goal of the season off an assist from freshman Tootoo Fotheringham (Winnipeg, Manitoba).
- The Penmen took their first lead early in the second period as freshman Aidan Rufa (Massena, N.Y.) finished a play set up by freshman Bryan Kim (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Jory Veenstra (Kansas City, Mo.).
- SNHU extended the lead to 3-1 on the power play at 7:00 of the second, when senior Brendan Lynch (Nepean, Ontario) scored his eighth goal of the season with freshman Kenny Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) earning the assist.
- Assumption answered later in the frame and then struck twice in the third period to take a 4-3 advantage.
- The Penmen forced overtime at 12:20 of the third when Pomposelli converted a power-play opportunity, assisted by sophomore Ryan Kayser (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Lynch.
- Junior goaltender Collin Berke (Crofton, Md.) made 39 saves in the loss.
- Assumption held a 44-35 edge in shots on goal.
- SNHU finished 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Greyhounds went 2-for-6.
- The Greyhounds take a 46-45-5 lead in the all-time series. This was the third overtime contest between the teams over the last eight meetings.
