Junior Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) went 5-for-8 with four extra-base hits, six RBI and four runs scored to lead the 21st-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team to a second consecutive doubleheader sweep of Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday at the Ballpark at SCSU. The Penmen posted an 11-7 win in the seven-inning opener and then cruised to an 11-3 victory in the second contest.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double to left-center off the bat of Keneston and a run-scoring single to center from graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.), but Southern Connecticut answered with three in the home half to take a 3-2 lead.
- SNHU scored twice in the second to go back in front and three more times in the third – keyed by a Keneston RBI double to left-center – to widen the gap to 7-3.
- The Penmen posted multiple runs for the fourth straight frame to start the game when an RBI double to center from graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) and a Keneston RBI single to right powered a three-run fourth that broke it open at 10-4.
- SCSU scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to claw back within 10-7, but the Penmen pushed across an unearned run in the sixth to cap the scoring.
- Keneston was 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and a pair of doubles.
- Senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.) stayed hot, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
- Cisco finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
- Senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
- Senior Jake Lapham (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) earned the win to improve to 3-0, despite allowing seven runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out four and walking a pair.
- Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) finished it off for the Penmen with a pair of shutout frames, relinquishing just one hit, while fanning four and walking only one.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Bozek began the game with a bang, taking the fourth pitch he saw deep to left for a lead-off home run that gave SNHU a 1-0 lead.
- Keneston doubled the advantage with a two-out solo shot to left that made it 2-0.
- After Southern Connecticut pulled even with two outs in the third, the Penmen moved back in front on another solo home run, this one by junior Lou Spadafora (Monroe Township, N.J.), that sparked a five-run fourth. Keneston also went back to work in the frame, stroking a two-run double, before Pisano followed suit with a two-RBI double of his own to make it 7-2.
- SNHU added a pair in the sixth on sacrifice flies from Pisano and junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.), as well as two more in the seventh on a triple to right-center from McNamara and a run-scoring single from senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas).
- Redshirt-junior Zachary Brassill (No. Hampton, N.H.) started and allowed one run on a hit over two innings, striking out a pair and walking one.
- Freshman Shawn Taylor (Sewell, N.J.) worked the next two frames, giving up a run on two hits, fanning two and walking a pair.
- Senior Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) relinquished just one run on six hits, punching out five and walking one, over the final four innings.
NOTES
- SNHU, ranked 21st in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and receiving votes in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll, has won 12 of its last 15, including nine of 11, seven of eight and five straight.
- The Penmen now have 10 home runs in 16 games. This was the second multi-home run game of the season for SNHU, which went deep three times against Thomas Jefferson University on March 7.
- SCSU still leads the all-time series, 50-34, but the Penmen have won the last 18 meetings, including eight straight at Southern Connecticut. The last win in the series for the Owls was April 7, 2013 (12-4), while their last home victory over SNHU came April 30, 2011 (3-0).
- The Bozek and Spadaforda home runs are the third of their career and their first in a Penmen uniform.
- Keneston went deep for the 17th time in his career, including the second time this season.
- Keneston was 6-for-17 (.353) with a home run, seven RBI and five runs scored in the four games with the Owls.
- Bozek went 4-for-8 with two RBI and three runs scored in the twin bill. He finished the four-game set with Southern Sconnecticut 9-for-16 (.563) with a home run, six RBI and six runs scored.
- Britt went 4-for-9 with an RBI and four runs scored, as he concluded the weekend set with SCSU 8-for-18 (.444) with four RBI and four runs scored.
- Britt has now hit safely in 14 of 15 contests this year, including four-in-a-row, and is batting .492 (32-65) to pace the NE10. He is also second in RBI (24).
- Keneston has hit safely in 10 of his last 11. He is hitting .349 and leads the league with 27 RBI.
