SNHU Softball Takes Series at Southern Connecticut with Doubleheader Split

Sousa drives in two in Game 1 as Penmen claim three of four in Northeast 10 opening weekend

Southern New Hampshire University softball split a Northeast 10 doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon, securing the opening series victory three games to one.  Sophomore Livi Sousa (Hudson, Mass.) provided the key hit in the opener, driving in two runs to help lead the Penmen to the win.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • SNHU broke open a scoreless game with a two-run fifth inning on a two-out single by Sousa and never looked back in a 6-1 victory.
  • Junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) added two RBIs, while sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) and senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) each drove in a run as part of a balanced 10-hit attack.
  • Senior Peyton Feldman (Foxboro, Mass.) paced the offense with three hits and two runs scored, while junior Charlotte Donovan (Biddeford, Maine) contributed two hits and scored twice.
  • Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) earned the win, striking out seven over 4.1 shutout innings, while sophomore Kayla O'Boyle (Commack, N.Y.) closed out the game to secure the save.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Southern Connecticut State responded in the second game, using a pair of big innings to earn a 9-1 victory.
  • The Owls scored once in the first before breaking the game open with three runs in the third and five more in the fourth to take control.
  • SNHU's lone run came in the fifth inning when senior Sidney Rose (Davidson, N.C.) delivered an RBI single.
NOTES
  • The Penmen won three of four games in the season-opening Northeast 10 series.  
  • SNHU has won six of its last eight games overall, and saw a five-game win streak against Southern Connecticut snapped in Game 2.  The Owls lead the all-time series 48-26-1.
  • Sousa recorded the first multi-RBI game of her career.
  • Alto and Feldman led the SNHU offense with six hits each in the series, with Alto leading the team with six RBIs.
  • Colbert won both of her starts against the Owls and has now won her last four appearances to improve to 5-2 on the season.
UP NEXT
  • SNHU's scheduled home-opening doubleheader against Molloy University on Monday has been postponed.
  • The Penmen will return to action next weekend with a pair of Northeast 10 doubleheaders at Pace University on Saturday and Sunday (March 28-29).
