Junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored in the nightcap to lead the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team to a doubleheader split with Thomas Jefferson University on Sunday at the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, Md. The Rams walked off against the Penmen, 5-4 in 11 innings, while SNHU bounced back for an 8-6 win in seven innings of game two.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run to right off the bat of senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas).
- After Jefferson pulled even with a pair in the bottom of the second, SNHU broke the deadlock in the fifth when senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) delivered a two-run single to left.
- The Rams again tied it in the eighth on a two-run homer that would set up extra innings.
- After SNHU recorded the first two outs of the bottom of the 11th, Jefferson rallied, with a batter reaching first on an error, a single to center and a walk loading the bases. Tripp Capers, who tied the game with the home run in the eighth, hit a ground ball to short that he beat out at first to walk it off for the Rams.
- Graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks a run scored.
- Lavigne finished 2-for-5 and drove in a pair.
- Britt was 1-for-5 with the home run and two RBI.
- Senior Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) went the first six innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits, while striking out six and walking one.
- Senior Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) came on in relief and worked four-and-two-thirds innings, giving up three runs – two earned – on six hits, while punching out six and walking three.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- With the score tied 1-1 in the second, junior Lou Spadafora (Monroe Township, N.J.) stroked an RBI double to left to put SNHU back in front, 2-1.
- Spadafora's run-scoring single to center and an RBI double to left by junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) powered a three-run fourth that extended the lead to 5-1.
- After Jefferson pulled within 5-4 in the sixth, an RBI double to left by senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) and two-run single to left from Valera gave the Penmen some breathing room at 8-4.
- SNHU's 6-9 hitters combined to go 7-for-12 with six RBI, five runs scored.
- Pisano (double, RBI, three runs, two steals) and Valera (two RBI, run, walk) were each 2-for-3.
- Spadafora was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
- Senior Jake Lapham (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) improved to 2-0 on the young season, allowing four runs – two earned – while fanning 11 and walking three during a six-inning performance.
- Freshman Shawn Taylor (Sewell, N.J.) relinquished two runs – one earned – over a third of an inning, striking out one and walking a pair.
- Redshirt-junior Ben Gilbert (Altamont, N.Y.) walked the only batter he faced.
- Graduate student Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.) collected his first save, striking out both batters he came on to challenge.
NOTES
- SNHU has won eight of its last 11, including five of seven, with both losses coming by a single run.
- Britt hit his first home run as a Penmen.
- Junior Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) becomes the first Penmen to reach 20 RBI.
- SNHU leads the all-time series, 9-2, and has captured five of the last six.
