Baseball Puts Up 24 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Jefferson

Cumiskey goes 8-for-9 with pair of HRs; Keneston homers and drives in nine

Junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) went 8-for-9 with two home runs and six RBI, classmate Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) was 5-for-8 with a home run and nine RBI, and freshman Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) struck out 14 over seven shutout innings in game one, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team took both games of Saturday's doubleheader with Thomas Jefferson University at the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, Md. The Penmen blanked the Rams, 15-0, in the opener, before winning a seven-inning affair in game two, 9-5.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • An RBI single from senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) and a two-run single from Keneston pushed Southern New Hampshire out to a 3-0 lead in the first.
  • A three-run fourth – highlighted by a two-run home run to center from Cumiskey – doubled the Penmen lead to 6-0.
  • SNHU blew it wide open with an eight-run sixth, powered by another two-run blast from Cumiskey and a grand slam off the bat of Keneston.
  • Cumiskey finished 5-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI and a pair of runs scored.
  • Keneston was 3-for-5 with a home run, six RBI and two runs scored.
  • Junior River Hart (Nashua, N.H.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Britt turned in a 2-for-4 performance with a double, walk, RBI and two runs.
  • Whitney (1-0) allowed just three hits over seven scoreless frames, punching out 14 without issuing a walk.
  • Sophomore Garrett Hammer (Auburn, N.H.) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief, giving up two hits, while fanning three and not walking a batter.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Cumiskey stayed hot in game two, delivering a two-run single that staked SNHU to a 2-0 lead in the second.
  • Keneston followed suit with a three-run double to spark a five-run third that extended the Penmen lead to 7-0.
  • Jefferson scored its first three runs of the day in the home half of the third to pull within four.
  • The score stayed that way into the sixth when graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) belted a two-run homer to center to make it 9-3.
  • Cumiskey went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
  • Keneston was 2-for-3 with a double, walk, three RBI and a pair of runs.
  • McNamara finished 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
  • Redshirt-junior Zachary Brassill (No. Hampton, N.H.) allowed three runs on three hits over two-and-two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking two.
  • Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) collected a win for the second straight appearance. Davis (2-1) worked four-and-a-third innings of relief, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking five.
NOTES
  • SNHU has won seven of its last nine, including four of five, with both losses coming by a single run.
  • Britt is still hitting over .600, as he has started the season 23-for-38 (.605) with 15 RBI and 16 runs scored.
  • Cumiskey now has three of the team's six home runs this season.
  • Keneston takes over the team lead with 19 RBI. He is batting .382 (13-34) with a team-best eight extra-base hits.
  • The home runs for Keneston and McNamara were their first in a Penmen uniform.
  • The Penmen have scored 102 runs through the first 10 games of the season and are hitting .302 as a team.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series, 8-1, and has captured four straight.
