Senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.) and senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) powered a wild extra-inning win in the opener, before freshman Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) tossed his first collegiate complete game in the nightcap, as the 25th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team extended its winning streak to 12 games with a doubleheader sweep of Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at Pappas Field.
HIGHLIGHTS (GAME ONE – SNHU 18, FRANKLIN PIERCE 17 – 11 INN.)
- The Penmen struck early, as Pisano delivered an RBI single in the first and senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) added a run-scoring groundout in the second.
- A two-run third featured an RBI double from graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) before graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) later scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.
- After Franklin Pierce answered with four runs in the fourth — highlighted by a two-run homer from Curt Boyd and RBI hits from Andreas Boglis and Nathan Eckerson — SNHU erupted in the fifth.
- McNamara and junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) hit back-to-back home runs before Bozek launched a grand slam to cap a six-run frame and give the Penmen an 11-4 lead.
- The Penmen extended the lead to 15-5 in the seventh on a two-run double by senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) and a two-run single from Pisano.
- Franklin Pierce mounted a massive comeback, however. Joey Acker blasted a three-run homer in the seventh and later drove in two more in the eighth, while Boyd and Shane Starr also delivered big hits as the Ravens scored 10 runs over the seventh through ninth innings to tie the game at 15-15.
- After a scoreless 10th, SNHU regained control in the 11th. Pisano reached on an error that brought home two runs, and McNamara followed with an RBI single to make it 18-15.
- Franklin Pierce answered with two runs in the bottom half, including RBI singles from Boglis and Eckerson, but senior Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) recorded the final out to secure the win.
- Bozek finished 3-for-4 with five runs scored, a home run and four RBI.
- Pisano drove in five runs, while McNamara went 3-for-7 with a home run and two RBI.
- Britt added two hits and two RBI, and Cisco scored twice and doubled.
- Sophomore Garrett Hammer (Auburn, N.H.) earned the win in relief, while Lendrum picked up the save.
- For Franklin Pierce, Acker went 4-for-6 with five RBI and five runs scored, while Boyd collected four hits and six RBI in the loss.
HIGHLIGHTS (GAME TWO – SNHU 11, FRANKLIN PIERCE 1)
- Franklin Pierce grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by Brycen Tetler, but that would be the only run allowed by Whitney.
- Cisco tied the game with a solo home run in the third before SNHU took control with three runs in the fourth. Valera delivered an RBI single and junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) added a run-scoring hit in the rally.
- The Penmen continued to add on, with Pisano driving in a run in the fifth and Bozek delivering a two-run single in the sixth. Sacrifice flies from Pisano, McNamara and senior Steven Kienzle (Holbrook, N.Y.) helped stretch the lead to 10-1.
- Cisco capped the scoring in the seventh, reaching on an error that brought home another run.
- Whitney was dominant, allowing just one run on six hits over seven innings, while striking out six and walking one in his first career complete game.
- Cisco finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
- Pisano added two hits and two RBI, while Cumiskey recorded a pair of hits and an RBI.
- Lavigne chipped in two hits and scored twice.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 25th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and receiving votes in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll, has won 12-in-a-row.
- SNHU remains in a tie atop the NE10 standings with Bentley University after the Falcons swept Saint Michael's College on Saturday.
- The Penmen scored 29 runs across the two games and totaled 24 hits.
- Bozek combined for four hits, six runs scored and six RBI in the doubleheader.
- Cisco reached base seven times with three hits (including a home run) and four walks.
- Valera extended his hit streak to 14 games.
- Whitney improved to 4-1 on the season and his 61 strikeouts (46.2 IP) lead the Penmen.
