Penmen Top Assumption 5-1 To Earn Split of Sunday's Doubleader

Southern New Hampshire University softball salvaged the final game of a four-game Northeast 10 series with Assumption University on Sunday afternoon, earning a 5-1 victory in Game 2 after falling 6-1 in the opener. Freshman Payton Bryson (Franklin, N.H.) paced the offense with two hits in each game, while freshman Sophie Roussel (Goffstown, N.H.) led the way in the circle in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • SNHU was limited offensively in a 6-1 loss in the opener.
  • Assumption broke the game open with three runs in the third inning, taking advantage of an SNHU miscue to build a 3-0 lead.
  • The Greyhounds added single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, including a solo home run by Kaitlyn Cahill, to extend the lead.
  • The Penmen's lone run came in the fifth inning when sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on an error.
  • Bryson led SNHU with two hits, while junior Mikaya Alto (Chelmsford, Mass.) added a hit.
  • Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs (four earned) while striking out five.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Penmen bounced back in the second game behind a balanced offensive effort and a strong start from Roussel to earn a 5-1 victory.
  • SNHU struck for two runs in the third inning, which started with singles and stolen bases from Bryson and sophomore Livi Sousa (Hudson, Mass.).
  • Junior Kaysie DeMoura (Taunton, Mass.) knocked in Bryson with a sacrifice fly, and Abbott made it 2-0 with an RBI infield single.
  • The Penmen added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Bryson before extending the lead in the fifth inning.
  • Senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) delivered a two-run single to make it 5-1.
  • Roussel was effective in the circle, allowing just one run on one hit over four innings before yielding to sophomore Julia Parise (East Meadow, N.Y.) and sophomore Kayla O'Boyle (Commack, N.Y.), who combined to close out the win.
  • Bryson and Abbott each recorded two hits, while Lineman drove in two runs to pace the offense.
NOTES
  • Bryson led the Penmen with four hits on the day, recording two in each game. Alto went a combined 3-for-6 in the doubleheader.
  • Roussel has not allowed an earned run in 22.2 innings, spanning her last four outings.
  • SNHU, at 10-8 in Northeast 10 play, is tied with Assumption for third place. Half of the conference schedule remains.
  • Lineman had reached safely in 14 straight games before an 0-for-3 in the first game.
  • Assumption leads the all-time series with SNHU, 51-39, and has won eight of the last ten meetings. The Game 2 win was SNHU's first over the Greyhounds in Hooksett since April 23, 2022 (8-6).
