Junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) went 6-for-8 with a pair of home runs and six RBI, as the 22nd-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team split a doubleheader with Adelphi University on Friday at Penmen Field. SNHU had its 15-game winning streak snapped after the Panthers rallied in the eighth inning to capture game one, 4-3, but rebounded with a 22-1 triumph in game two.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- With the game locked in a pitcher's duel, Southern New Hampshire drew first blood on a third-inning RBI single by graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.).
- Valera doubled the Penmen lead to 2-0 with a solo home run to left in the sixth.
- The lead slipped away in the eighth when SNHU committed three straight errors to begin the frame, with Adelphi cashing in three unearned runs to leap in front, 3-2.
- After the Panthers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, Valera crushed a ball down the left field line in the home half that pulled the Penmen back within 4-3. SNHU had two on, with the tying run in scoring position, when the game ended on a questionable strike-three call.
- Valera went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, two RBI and two runs scored.
- Senior Jake Lapham (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) was charged with two runs – both unearned – on four hits over seven-plus innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter, though he did hit one.
- Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits over two innings of work. He had won four straight decisions, as he falls to 6-3 on the season.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- With the game scoreless, SNHU struck for five in the third, including RBI doubles from senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) and Valera, sandwiched around a run-scoring single by graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.).
- The Penmen added seven more in the fourth, as a two-run single from McNamara and two-run double by Valera broke it open, before a solo shot by senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) capped the scoring and made it 12-1.
- Three bases-loaded walks kicked off what would be a 10-run fifth, with junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) delivering the big blow with a grand slam to left-center that made it 20-1. McNamara's two-run single finished off the frame.
- McNamara (walk, six RBI, three runs) and Valera (two doubles, walk, four RBI, two runs) were both 3-for-4.
- Cumiskey finished 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored.
- Pisano (double, RBI, three runs), Lavigne (home run, walk, RBI, run), senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas; walk, three runs) and senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.; double, walk, four runs) were all 2-for-3.
