Senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) went 4-for-6 and knocked in four runs, as the 22nd-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team swept Saint Michael's College in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Penmen Field.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Southern New Hampshire moved out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with an RBI groundout from senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) and a run-scoring double to right-center by graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) plating the runs.
- Saint Michael's pulled even in the top half of the second with a two-run home run to left off the bat of Jack Weber.
- SNHU moved back in front in the third, pushing across an unearned run on an RBI groundout from junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.).
- Junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) nudged the lead to 4-2 with a solo shot in the sixth.
- It was 4-3 when the Penmen added single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, including a solo bomb from junior River Hart (Nashua, N.H.) that pushed the SNHU advantage to 6-3.
- Saint Michael's loaded the bases in the ninth, but could only plate one run.
- Cumiskey went 2-for-3 with a walk, home run, RBI and a run scored.
- Pisano was 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
- McNamara finished 1-for-3 with a walk, double and an RBI.
- Senior Jake Lapham (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) improved to 5-0 on the season, as he allowed three runs on five hits over six-and-two-thirds innings, striking out four, walking three and hitting four batters.
- Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) collected his first save of the season, working the final two-and-a-third innings and giving up one run on three hits, while punching out three and walking one.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Southern New Hampshire again took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run double down the left field line by Pisano.
- Saint Michael's sliced its deficit in half in the second, before Pisano again knocked in two with a single through the left side that made it 4-1 in the third.
- McNamara stretched the lead to 5-1 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to right.
- SNHU answered SMC's run in the top of the sixth with one of its own in the home half, as an RBI single up the middle by senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.) made it 6-2.
- Pisano finished 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
- Britt went 2-for-2 and scored twice.
- Cumiskey (double, run) and Bozek (RBI, run) were both 1-for-3.
- Freshman Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) fired another complete game, allowing just two runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out 10 and walking only one.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 22nd in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and receiving votes in both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll and D2 Baseball Top 25, has won 21 of the last 22, including six straight.
- The Penmen lead the all-time series, 51-3, and have won 41 of the last 42 meetings versus Saint Michael's. SNHU is a perfect 27-0 at home versus the Purple Knights,
- Cumiskey now has a team-best 14 home runs on the year and 15 in his career.
- Hart's third home run of the season is the 13th of his career.
- Whitney his now tossed three straight complete games. Over that span he is 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA, allowing four runs on 17 hits over 21 innings, striking out 21 and walking three.
- Senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) had his team-best eight-game hitting streak snapped in game one. Valera also saw his seven-game hit streak and 22-game reached base streak come to an end in the first game.
- Britt and Pisano now have the longest hitting streaks on the squad at six games.
- Britt (25), Bozek (21) and Cumiskey (21) have the longest reached base streaks on the team.
