Graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) and junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) each drove in four runs, while junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) came on in relief to allow just one hit over five-and-a-third shutout innings, as the 25th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team pulled away from Saint Anselm College late for a 15-7 victory Thursday afternoon at Penmen Field.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Southern New Hampshire moved out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI double down the right field line by senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.).
- SNHU then plated six with two outs in the second. A three-run double to right-center from Cisco was the big blow. That was followed by run-scoring singles by senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) and graduate student Shane McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.), sandwiched around another RBI double by Pisano, to stretch the Penmen lead to 7-0.
- Saint Anselm answered back with a four-run third, with George Slauson delivering an opposite-field, three-run home run to pull the Hawks within 7-4.
- The visitors pulled even with a three-run fourth, tying the game at 7-all with a bases-loaded walk.
- SNHU went back in front with two runs in the fifth, including an RBI single from Cisco that made it 9-7.
- The Penmen put it away with three in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Cumiskey had a two-run single in the sixth and an RBI double in the seventh.
- Cisco finished 4-for-5 with a double, walk, four RBI and a pair of run scored.
- Cumiskey went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, four RBI and two runs scored.
- Pisano was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a walk, two RBI and a run scored.
- Senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) turned in a 2-for-3 performance with a double, two RBI and a pair of runs.
- Junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored a pair of runs.
- Freshman Shawn Taylor (Sewell, N.J.) made the first start of his career and was charged with three runs – two earned – on one hit and four walks over two-plus innings. He struck out a pair.
- Three relievers then combined to allow four runs – three earned – on three hits, while walking six and striking out a pair in an inning-and-a-third, before Davis came on to slam the door.
- Davis (6-2) struck out five and walking, while allowing a single hit over five-and-a-third innings.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 25th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and receiving votes in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll, has won 10-in-a-row.
- The win moves SNHU into a tie atop the NE10 standings with Bentley University.
- Davis runs his scoreless innings streak to 19.0, spanning five appearances – all in relief – dating back to March 29. During that stretch he is 4-0, allowing just eight hits and not a single run, while striking out 16 and walking five.
- In 14 appearances – all out of the bullpen – Davis leads the NE10 in ERA (1.62) and wins, while ranking second in opposing batting average (.199), and fifth in strikeouts (46) and innings pitched (39.0).
- The Penmen lead the all-time series with Saint Anselm, 75-35, and have won 13 of the last 14 meetings. SNHU has also captured 24 of the last 25 at home against the Hawks.
- Valera extends his hit streak to 12 games. During his 12-game hitting streak, he is 19-for-47 (.404) with five home runs, 14 RBI and 13 runs scored.
- SNHU improves to 10-0 at home this season and is now 170-38 (.817) at Penmen Field since the beginning of the 2014 season.
