Senior Dakota Britt (Rockwall, Texas) knocked in a pair of runs, but the 25th-ranked and third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was tripped up by 23rd-ranked and second-seeded Molloy University, 7-5, Friday afternoon at Mitchel Field in game No. 3 of the NCAA Division II East Regional II pod.
HIGHLIGHTS
- After Molloy drew first blood with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, Southern New Hampshire answered with an RBI base hit from senior JR Bozek (Danville, N.H.) that made it 1-1.
- The Lions scored twice in the fourth and two more times in the seventh to take a 5-1 advantage, but the Penmen would not go away, striking for three in the eighth. A Britt RBI single, run-scoring ground out from senior Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) and an RBI knock by junior Casey Cumiskey (Milltown, N.J.) pulled SNHU within 5-4.
- Molloy grabbed two of the runs back in the home half, however, and took a 7-4 lead to the ninth.
- The Penmen put together a rally in the final frame, using a pair of hit batters and a walk to load the bases with no outs. The Lions would induce a pop out and two fly outs – including a Britt sac fly – to end the game.
- Britt (two RBI, run) and Cumiskey (RBI) finished 1-for-4.
- Senior Kyle Lavigne (Bedford, N.H.) was on base three times and scored a run, going 2-for-2 and getting hit by a pitch.
- Graduate student Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run scored.
- Bozek (walk, HBP, RBI, run) and junior Joel Valera (Boston, Mass.; walk) were 1-for-3.
- Senior Jake Lapham (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) was charged with seven runs – six earned – on nine hits over seven-and-a-third innings, striking out five and walking three.
- Junior Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) and graduate student Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.) finished out the eighth, each allowing an inherited runner to score.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 25th in both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II Baseball Coaches Poll and the D2 Baseball Top 25, while receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25, had won 29 of the last 33, including six of eight.
- The Penmen have now dropped three of their last five – their toughest five-game stretch since going 1-4 over five contests from March 20-29.
- Molloy, ranked 23rd in the NCBWA Division II Top 25 and 24th in the ABCA Coaches Poll, has captured five of its last six.
- The Penmen dip to 50-29 (.633) in their 13th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship, including 7-3 against Molloy.
- Since NCAA regional play was split into pods in 2019, SNHU is 14-2 in pod play, but sees its 10-game winning streak halted. Taking into account both pod play and the East Super-Regional, the Penmen are now 20-3 going back to the 2021 season (when there was no pod play due to Covid) and 24-5 since 2018.
- SNHU leads the all-time series with Molloy, 14-13, and has captured seven of the last 11 meetings, including six of eight, but had its four-game winning streak snapped. The Lions are 2-1 versus the Penmen at Mitchel Field.
- Cisco extends his team-best hitting streak to 11 games, while Cumiskey's reached-base streak now stands at 33.

- The Penmen take on sixth-seeded Felician University in a rematch of Thursday's NCAA opener Saturday (May 16) at 11 a.m. in an elimination game. The winner faces Molloy in the East Regional II championship following the conclusion of the morning contest.
